HILO — Video from a camera worn by a Hawaii police officer who shot and killed a man shows the tense confusion amid a rapid succession of gunshots.
“I don’t know if he’s down, Central,” the officer says into his radio. “He’s right by the open door, I don’t know if I shot him or not.”
When officers responded to a report of domestic abuse at a Hilo home Sunday night, Ryan Y. Santos came out of the house and fired on them, police said.
The Hawaii Police Department on Tuesday released a seven-minute video clip from the officer who fired at Santos. The department has not released the officer’s name.
The footage, posted online by Hawaii Tribune-Herald, contains scenes of violence that some may find disturbing, as well as expletives.
Shortly after entering the home and speaking with a female resident, the officer appears to see Santos and shouts, “gun, gun!”
The officer jumps over a banister and takes cover behind a vehicle.
More than two dozen shots are heard in rapid succession.
Santos used two firearms during the shootout: an unknown bolt-action rifle and an illegally constructed AR-15, said Chief Paul Ferreira.
Santos died inside the house, Ferreira said.
