Quarantine mess is madness
My wife and I are currently stuck in Kaua‘i with no place to go or anything to do.
Notwithstanding the fact that we’ve both been vaccinated, passed two COVID tests within six days and IMMEDIATELY uploading our latest test results to our state of Hawaii trip accounts; and NOW we wait….and we wait….and we wait…for some state bureaucrat to get off his or her ass and come to work so our test results can be APPROVED.
THEN, and only then, will they START the process of getting us out of this quarantine rabbit hole they have set up to “protect” us all.
And, to add insult to injury, we’ve been told that even this process could take “several days.” In the meantime, we’re both sitting here like a couple of chumps WAITING on these people. We “played their game” and did what they asked of us, only for them NOT to do their job by PROMPTLY approving our paperwork and letting us go about our “vacation.”
Needless to say, I just rescheduled our flight back home. And we’re taking our money back with us, because under NO CIRCUMSTANCES are we going to sit in some resort and report in to the authorities every day while they decide whether or not to “free us from this prison.”
We’ve got better things to do with our time and MONEY. And we won’t be back, ever again!!! The Hawaiian tourist industry can go straight to hell. And, you can quote me on that.
Steve Trexler, Denver
Non-maskers risk lives
I’ve encountered many people, particularly those visiting our island, who believe since they have gotten vaccinated for COVID-19 they needn’t follow social distancing and mask guidelines.
Allow me to address this issue. But first, the basics; no matter your political affiliation, a mask serves as a barrier to mouth and nose exhalents containing the COVID-19. Second, social distancing provides a “safe zone” where one’s residual exhalants “drop off” harmlessly before being inhaled by another. And third, COVID-19 still kills people.
That understood, understand that despite one being fully vaccinated, they can still catch COVID-19 and can still spread COVID-19, the vaccine only serving to, more than likely, keep the vaccinated from facing death in an ICU due to COVID-19 pneumonia.
The kicker, and this is extremely important, is there are some people who are on a type of chemotherapy that renders any type of COVID-19 vaccine useless as soon as it enters the body.
My wife happens to be one of these people. So when I am in a store, shopping for my family, and I see people not practicing social distancing, not wearing a mask, or wearing a mask improperly, not cooperating with store management concerning COVID-19 regulations, etc., I see them as the potential killers of my wife, as I, though vaccinated, can catch COVID-19 and pass it on to my wife, who might die from it.
I see them as mortal enemies who do not care if my wife lives or dies, or if my kids have a mom. The health and welfare of my ‘ohana mean absolutely nothing to them.
Do I believe all who live or visit Kaua‘i should wear a mask (properly) and practice social distancing because my wife might die if they do not? Oh, yes, I most certainly do.
I would do the same for anyone’s loved one. Wearing a mask properly in a store or business for a few minutes versus someone’s life is not even any kind of sacrifice for me when it comes to protecting someone’s life.
But, I realize, too, there are some people devoid of empathy and kindness, let alone aloha, selfishness and rebellion being their top priority. I have witnessed this in stores on our island.
I would be very interested to hear from any of you who believe my viewpoint is unfair or selfish.
Christopher Schaefer, Kapa‘a
Damn Steve, that sucks. Make sure and tell all your friends.
Mahalo
Steve-
That is egregious! I was afraid of this happening so I’ve postponed my annual trip to Kauai for two years now (2020 and 2021). My plan is to wait another year or two. Hopefully Kauai will get their act together by then. Absolutely ridiculous rules when the rest of the country is opening up and cases have fallen dramatically due to the vaccines! I’m so sorry that is happening to you. I’d be doing the same thing and getting the hell out of there!
Good luck!
All these negative rants from spoiled, entitled residents…..almost 40 comments.
You sound like little children….”I live here, and we don’t want you here anyway”.
Traveling to Kauai is extremely challenging and has been for quite sometime. I say this as a long time resident.
My apologies to you as the so called people in charge have absolutely no idea ( or maybe they do and could care less as it doesn’t effect them at all) You deserve a full refund and it should come out of the pockets of Politicians who have not missed a paycheck this entire time.
Kauai is a wonderful place with wonderful people.
Also…its beyond time to either make the proper changes starting with getting rid of the military style bullshit that you a greeted with as soon as you arrive also those thermal facial recognition machines .
THE biosecurity state isn’t wanted.
Dear Mask advocate.
I understand your concerns as they are relevant.
There will always be disrespectful individuals with any situations in life however, being vaccinated, wearing a mask and still living in fear ….Turn off your TV, stop listening to the so called state run experts who Push FEAR PROPAGANDA down your throat, have you fearing other individuals as if they are contaminated. because that is what they are there to do.
Do your own research, live your best life with eating proper diet enjoying nature and enjoying the company of friends and family and others .
Living in constant fear is not Living at all.
What fear is it you seem to think we all have? I don’t have a fear of driving, but I wear a seatbelt.
I look forward to your forthcoming piece berating people who don’t wear a seatbelt… ya know, since wearing a seat belt is the same as wearing a garment over your breathing orifices.
June 15, today’s the day. They’ve lifted the restrictions. Or so they said they did. Because they’ve still got people under quarantine. It doesn’t seem like the restrictions are lifted. What now? Tier 4 started on Saturday. 50% capacity outdoors means up to 200 people for outdoor parties. It is going to get worse if they don’t watch out on the no face mask rule and no six feet apart distance. And they are starting sports again.
They haven’t lifted the quarantine rule and they haven’t lifted the face mask rule. At the airports, they have not done away with it. It is here to stay. Hawai’i is the one of few states that still has it. They lost out on lots of conventions from the mainland due to the rules. What will they intend to do about tourism?
Two well-written letters.
Steve Trexler, NO ONE should have to go through what you and your wife did — if I had, I would be livid, too. The state/county not only owe you a sincere apology, but reimbursement of your costs.
Christopher Schaefer, your viewpoint is hardly a selfish one. I see the same thing you do almost anywhere I go. I would be relieved if people would simply show a little common sense and think about others before themselves.
Dear Christopher, stay home. Also, don’t ever leave your home. Safeway delivers. Good luck and stay home.
Hey Steve from Denver,
When I went to Kauai, I was unable to download my test results that Walgreens so quickly handled for me in a timely manner for free, because I have a flip phone. So, anticipating this, I carried paper copies and presented them to the kind auntie at the receiving area of the airport. She was so patient, kind and understanding and I waited in gratitude as she confirmed my negative result and allowed us through to visit this amazing amazing island that is nearly free of covid because they are so careful.
I did witness a guy in the next line having a little tantrum about his vacation not starting soon enough and I noticed that he had to sit in the corner with a dunce hat on for a while.
I am glad you left the island early so I didn’t have to ride the tour boat down the Napali coast with you.
Have a nice trip home Steve. You won’t be missed…
I feel badly for your wife. It must be tough. However, she will never be able to get vaccinated and the virus isn’t going away. So, would you have the rest of us who are vaccinated, locals as well as tourists, continue to wear masks and social distance for the rest of our lives to avoid giving you the virus which you may end up passing to your wife? Would you have businesses such as restaurants and bars continue at 50% capacity forever to protect you? Would you have us continue to limit gatherings to 10 people inside and 25 people outside to protect your wife for the rest of our lives? I think you and your wife are the ones who need to protect yourselves as you see fit while the rest of the world gets rid of these restrictions and gets back to normal.
Mr. Trexler – You knew, or should have known, that we are under a very specific entry policy for travelers (with all the risk associated with that) and you came here anyway. So rather than waiting until the risk had passed, you took a chance by traveling here DURING A PANDEMIC, and it didn’t work so well. You have chosen to blame others and not yourself for your decisions, so going back to Denver is probably the best outcome for everyone. Given your entitled attitude, I’m pretty sure you won’t be missed.
First off RIGHT ON STEVE!
Secondly Chris, since your asking for it… I am genuinely sorry for the fear you are living in. Also! WOW! “I see them as mortal enemies”? REALLY? The ability of the brainwashing media is mind boggling to me. Demonizing a people group (in this case, the people who do feel as strongly that a mask is necessary at this point) never leads to anything good. In fact it usually leads to loss of freedom and then eventual genocide. You were probably the guy screaming at people at the beach to put their masks on. How sad to let others dictate your happiness! Hopefully your views are not shared by the majority of Kauai because that would be the end of the “aloha spirit” which honestly has slowly gone away over the years anyway. I don’t know if I’ve ever been so disappointed to see the fear swell up in some “locals” so much to the point that they would go to the round a bout in Poipu and bang on any car even resembling a tourist car, yelling and screaming to “GO HOME” and other shameful words. The good ol days of Kauai are over. Fear and greed has taken over and your money will not save you.
YAH please forgive us! I know your love casts out all fear! You have given us all that we need to be healthy and stay healthy. It is found on this amazingly created earth! What man has created is NOTHING compared to you, God. Thank you for your constant grace upon us. Continue to teach us how to love like your Son Yeshua has loved. Praise Yahweh!
Hey, Steve Trexler. “we’re the on that brought the Delta Covid to Oahu?”
Yeah take your money . “It’s probably full of germs !”
Six days before arrival? Here’s the rules from HawaiiCOVID19.com: “Travelers wishing to use the pre-travel test to bypass quarantine must have a negative result from a test taken from a trusted partner no more than 72 hours BEFORE beginning the final leg of their trip. Anyone without a negative test result PRIOR to departure must quarantine upon arrival.” Therefore, six days is 144 hours. Was that a typo on your behalf? If not, it may be why you are “stuck”.
Mr. Trexler: before you came to Kauai did you register with the Safe Travels Program and download negative test results? If so why are you in quarantine? If you did not go through the proper procedure you have no right to be so indignant.
Christopher Schaefer: I am with you 100% but there are ignorant bozos who could not care less about the health of others. Ignore them as best you can as they are the same jerks who think the former guy is still president!
Steve, please do go back and tell your friends not to visit us. Don’t ever come back again. You won’t be missed.
If one desires to live life in complete subjugation to a “Government” overlord with ulterior motives regarding everything that gives them more Power, be my guest. You can mask yourself, quarantine yourself, run away every time someone tries to shake your hand, and enter the fetal position if someone invites you to a social gathering. You drank the cool aide and we get that. But to vomit your paranoia and lack of common sense over everyone else is counterproductive. There’s more and more evidence that masks don’t do much (unless they’re n95 rated}, and the vaccine is an experiment looking for Guinea Pigs every week. Many of us in the United States have already had the Covid flu and we’re all more immune now than those who took the experimental shot “cure”. You have a 99.97% chance of being just fine after getting coved based on “reported” cases the media loves to use. The latest studies out use the projected “total” number of cases of people who have had the virus in the US and probably didn’t even know it. The total actual Covid cases is just shy of 100,000,000 people who have had Covid. With 560,000 confirmed deaths that means you have a .0056% chance of dying of Covid 19 instead of the .03% chance of mad media “reported” cases. A majority of everyone under 50 who have had the virus didn’t even know they were sick! Children are basically immune! Shutting down the world did nothing but get rid of Trump and make our politicians drunk with power they will be hesitant to let go of! So enjoy your two shots every 6 months or year! We’ll grab the popcorn and wait to see the the severe health challenges and diseases our brothers and sisters will be dying of as a result 5 to 10 years from now! May God grant that that doesn’t happen and the vaccines are bullet proof safe! There are fears to contend with no matter what your shot choice is.
Nothing,
Please stop trying to do math. Use the calculator function on your cell phone. You make the same mistakes every time.
560,000 divided by 100,000,000 is 0.0056 which is 0.56%. Which means that if you are right about how many people had COVID (34,000,000 is the confirmed figure) one out of every 200 people with COVID died. That is some serious news. If the official numbers are right its one out of 60.
Dr. Jim, granted, nothings free forgot to move the decimal point, but you keep referring to the 560,000 people who died without the caveat that, as admitted by the CDC, 80% of that number represents patients who also had two or more co-morbidity factors. For the lay person, that translates to the fact that they were very sick people to begin with. The vast majority of us do not fit into that category so lets say 112,000 average people supposedly died from COVID, although most people now realize that figure is grossly overstated due to faulty or non-existent testing. Serious news? Perhaps not.
To put it a different way, let’s use your figure of 34,000,000 COVID cases and divide it by 112,000, my figure of the “average” person’s death and you get one out of 304 people died after contracting COVID. Only I look at that statistic a little differently. For every death, I see 304 people who possibly have a natural life-time immunity from COVID, unlike the poor souls who, in all probability, will have to get a repeat “jab” every six to twelve months in perpetuity, just like the flu shot, and we all know how effective that is. I’ll stick with naturally acquired immunity rather than Big Pharma’s science experiment any day!
The fact that you don’t take advantage of contactless shopping and expect the world to treat every individual they come into contact with and assume they are caring for an immunodeficient person is selfish and unrealistic. Take some responsibility for your situation and stop subjecting you and your wife to unnecessary risk. Don’t blame others for your situation. That being said cancer is terrible and I hope and pray your wife beats it.
Dear Steve Trexler,
Next time, try Florida.
Christopher,
Only 60% of CDC and NIH own employees have been vaccinated (as of May 16) according to Dr Fauci, Chief Medical Advisor to the President. This despite the administration’s push to vaccinate every American. Either the employees of the nations top health organizations are reluctant, or they have no plans to get vaccinated at all.
And not to make light of your wife’s serious condition, but what are your plans when state authorities eventually lift all mask mandates?

Steve Trexler,
Spare us the drama! Since you’re both in quarantine, it’s obvious you did NOT comply with Hawai’i’s requirements PRIOR to arrival (as below.)
In 2021 there’s been thousands upon thousands who’ve arrived in the State (approximately 25,000 daily), did their due diligence, and were NOT quarantined. These requirements aren’t new. They were implemented last year to protect Hawai’i residents, and visitors who’ve done what was asked of them. It’s not rocket science, you’re no exception, but have the audacity to rudely blame Hawai’i for your issue. Shame on you! THIS is all on you, and I’m guessing you’ll omit ‘that’ part when complaining to everyone you can back in Denver. PS: We’ll do just fine without your “MONEY” + nasty attitude. Aloha!
“Travelers wishing to use the pre-travel test to bypass quarantine must have a negative result from a test taken from a trusted partner no more than 72 hours BEFORE beginning the final leg of their trip. Anyone without a negative test result PRIOR to departure must quarantine upon arrival. The negative test result must be uploaded onto Safe Travels or printed out prior to departure and hard copy in hand when arriving in Hawai‘i.”

Ouch, we lost Steve everyone. Shoots.
I fly back and forth every week for work and dang-nab-it, filling out that on-line form takes a whole 2 minutes. Exhausting. Uncalled for really. Steve doesn’t know any of us and our rotting dead corpses shouldn’t be his concern. He’s got money. Honest money, and as we all know if you got money then the answer to any question is, “Yes master.” That what you looking for Steve?
I think I speak for the entire island Steve, “we don’t want you or your attitude back here.”
Florida seems more up your alley.
Typical resident……”I live here, therefore I am better than you”.
You promise Steve???
Christopher, yes, I feel your attitude is selfish. You are saying that tens of thousand’s of people should be inconvenienced, be hot and uncomfortable and adjust their lives to accommodate one person ? I am sorry that your wife is on chemo, and thus is more vulnerable. But, she could also catch the flu, viral or bacterial pneumonia or a myriad variety of other diseases. If she is at such high risk, she should stay home. The concept that everyone needs to adjust their lives to suit her needs is just not socially acceptable. I have emphysema, and am vaccinated. The mask makes it very difficult to breath for me. So, by your reasoning, all mask mandates should end because it is a inconvenience to me ! Sorry, that is not how htings work. Just like older, vulnerable people were advised to stay home pre covid vaccine, I suggest your wife do the same. The mask mandate is going to end soon, so I suggest you adjust YOUR life, not expect everyone to change theirs. Sorry if you see this as insensitive, but it is the truth.
Dear Mr. Trexler,
Yes, the rules can be a bit difficult, and the ‘safe travels” site a bit hard to navigate, but if you follow them, you should not have had this issue. Kauai has been on the state “safe travels” program for over a month. You get a negative test from an approved source 72 hours before your flight, upload it to the site and get a QR code on your phone. You arrive in Lihue, show the code and you are free to move about the island. Either your tests were not from an approved source, or you did not follow some other aspect of the conditions ! The requirements are clear and highly publicized. While I am sorry your vacation was ruined , the fault lies with yourself, not Hawaii. So please, feel free to leave and if you wish, not return. To be honest, people with your attitude are really not welcome anyways. You seem to think that your money is all important, but only to you !!! There are many more things of value in this world ! Have a safe journey back to Denver !!!!
Christopher, just do the best you can to keep from getting COVID and giving it to your wife. Things inevitably are going to loosen up here regarding the masks and social distancing. The handwriting is on the wall from the Governor’s latest edict. Talk to your doctor about getting a supply of Ivermectin in case you start showing symptoms. It has helped many people to lessen the effects, along with vitamin C, D and zinc. Be safe and be well. May your wife recover quickly.
Steve Trexler, Denver…. to get out of the State there are no restrictions. The restrictions start in the place you are flying into, so don’t blame us. Why are you traveling in the first place if you have no patience? You know there are restrictions EVERYWHERE, Covid isn’t new. Maybe use your brain next time and we really hope you DON’T come back. One less Sunscreen covered tourist sounds good to me.
Christopher Schaefer, Kapa‘a …. Stay home or keep your mask on. I am so tired of people dictating like they are some kind of Crosswalk police at Kindergarten. A whole new level of Karens emerged from this Chinavirus.
CommonSenseish:
“A whole new level of Karens emerged from this Chinavirus.”
That’s a matter of perspective. From this side of the fence we witnessed a whole new breed of immature, selfish, cry babies who’ve been stomping their feet & behaving like it’s a hardship masking up around others to help control the spread of a contagious virus.
If the prior President hadn’t downplayed it, wore a mask, and encouraged his followers to do the same, then this would have been contained much sooner because his puppets (like you) would have willingly complied with their leader.
LTEreader, please feel free to stay on your side of the fence, wear your COVID collection device everywhere you go (cotton masks actually absorb the sneeze or cough droplets and remain with you till you wash your virtue signaling device) and, by all means, get your booster shot every six months for the rest of your life. The latest data indicates you may not have to do this very much longer. As for Trump, his message was that there are effective treatments for COVID outside of nRNA jabs, i.e. hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin, along with vitamin C, D and zinc. This knowledge was suppressed by Big Pharma and the Lame Stream Media because, if this were the case, the experimental nRNA jabs could not legally be implemented as a stopgap measure. It’s all about the money folks. Lots and lots of it. Unfortunately, millions of people voluntarily became part of the animal test group, the results of which are unknown, although the evidence is growing that the future does not look so good for them. Thus begs the question, who’s the real puppet here?
