HONOLULU — Hawaii Gov. David Ige on Monday extended an eviction moratorium he implemented during the coronavirus pandemic for another two months, but he doesn’t expect to keep it longer than that.
The existing emergency order instituting a pause on evictions was due to expire Tuesday, but Ige extended it for 60 more days. It’s now due to expire on Aug. 6.
During an interview on the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Spotlight Hawaii livestream program, the governor noted the Legislature passed a bill encouraging landlords and tenants to work out payments for past rent to prevent evictions. He didn’t say whether he would sign the measure but said said he thought it was “important.”
“We are asking all of the advocates and stakeholders to help us implement the mediation programs and really help as many people as we can in that window,” Ige said.
He also noted rent and mortgage relief was available.
unfortunately, many rentals are ohana style and this rule is unenforceable. My landlady kicked me out with 2 weeks notice after raising my rent two times in 6 months. greed fueled as I hear she brought other renters in at twice the rent.
So for the renters/landlords for whom this does apply (homes w/federally backed mortgages,) pretty soon there will be a year’s+ rent due…. Since such a huge portion of the population works in hospitality and lost their jobs, that means there’s going to be a HUGE influx of people needing housing– as it’s doubtful any of them are sitting on at least $24000 in their bank accounts.
Landlords + tenants are “encouraged” to work something out? GOOD LUCK with that. In all my years here- spanning 7 different landlords- I can think of just ONE who was a decent enough person who would be understanding & willing to work with me.
This will be a massive problem across the nation, leading to more corporate/investment firm/foreign buyouts of houses on the market. These entities will use the properties as investments or simply to park their cash, some will be rented and others will sit empty while the cost of housing for everyday Americans continues to skyrocket.
What NEEDS to be done is a government mandate for a pause on mortgage payments; 10-14 months for qualified lenders/owners of rental properties. Those who lost their jobs due to Covid are excused from paying rent for a period of time while their landlords are excused from making mortgage payments, with the missing/skipped months simply tacked on to the remaining payments- with no extra interest, fees, or penalties.
Let it serve as the bank’s reparations for the 2008 financial collapse they caused, and payback for their taxpayer-funded bailouts.
Wow. I live in Diamond Head. And Pakistani. I used to work for an engineering firm. But they laid me off. I’ve been there for 12 years. Severance pay was $80,000 dollars. So my apartment is all paid for. Complements of the bank. I’m going to Ho Chi Minh city Vietnam next year. Diamond Oahu is where I live. Face mask? I think so still. Shopping.
The state’s moratorium is NOT limited to only those with federally-backed mortgages.
And the landlady raising rent and kicking out with 2 weeks’ notice likely would have seen penalties had it been properly reported, and she would have dead-ended had she tried a court eviction filing.
And bills do not just casually “encourage” landlords and tenants to work out payments. There are formal incentives and consequences built in to certain actions.
I didn’t want to report since we all live in such a small community, my kid going school with her grandkids, etc . . . Plus it’s a total illegal rental so didn’t want any pilikia for them, a long time local family.
she’ll live with her conscience I guess, if she has one
