HONOLULU — Firefighters in Hawaii rescued an 11-year-old girl who was injured while hiking on a mountain range east of Honolulu on Monday.
The Honolulu Fire Department responded to a report of a young girl who fell while hiking with family on the Wiliwilinui Ridge Trail around 9:30 a.m., KHON-TV reported.
Authorities said the family was hiking for about two hours when the girl fell, injuring her arm. Rescue crews airlifted the injured hiker and her mother, who was not injured, to a landing zone for treatment.
Emergency Medical Services reported that the girl was treated for an arm injury and taken to a hospital in serious condition. No other injuries were reported. The girl’s father and two others in the group hiked down the trail.
The girl was one of several rescued hikers who were either injured or lost over Memorial Day weekend, including a hiker experiencing a muscle cramp, an older hiker who injured her ankle and a group of hikers who were found lost about 2 miles (3 kilometers) from the trail, KHON-TV reported Sunday.
The Honolulu Fire Department is urging residents and visitors to assess their experience level before starting a hike and choosing trails that are safe and best suited for their capabilities. Hikers are also encouraged to pack food and water and stay hydrated.
