“Irene Gusman would be so happy,” said J Robertson, playing and umpiring for the ‘Ohana Motors Rebels, as he watched Paula Gusman make a play for the East Kaua‘i Legends (Wanda Ibia is the other mother in the EK Legends lineup) Saturday during the opener of the Kaua‘i Senior Softball league second-round games at the Peter Rayno Sr. Park (Ernie Domingo said they did park cleanup Friday!) in Hanama‘ulu. Paula plays all the bases, and is the leadoff hitter for the Legends.

In the Kuku’s Aces dugout, state Rep. Dee Morikawa tended to scorekeeping duty, and wasn’t that Gladys Jacinto — she even did sweat equity while daughter Josey’s home was being built at ‘Ele‘ele Iluna — the mother of the Jacinto girls (all Waimea High School outstanding athletes) trotting in at the inning’s end?
Trinette Kaui (husband Wes was doing pitching duty for the Keonimana Gents) was among the field of spectators (yes, they were all compliant with the new COVID-19 rules!) who could still enjoy the outdoor sporting event.
Kudos to coaches Daryl Date, Tony Magaoay, and all (!!!) the hands who wrapped up the Kaua‘i Youth Volleyball league (yep, there were a lot of moms in the stands of the South Shore Sports Center!) Saturday night just as the new Tier 3 rules went into effect, and kudos to coaches Kevin Devitt (yes, the Rush kids were at the mall following their matches at the north Vidinha Stadium fields in Lihu‘e), coach KevinGusman, and all those hands who put together the Kaua‘i Soccer Association spring season that closed Saturday.
OK, now it’s on to graduation.
