LIHU‘E — Almost all Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative’s 34,000 members were impacted by an island-wide power outage on Thursday, most likely caused by a trip at one of KIUC’s generating sources.
Power went out around 1:45 p.m. on Thursday. KIUC, which powers much of the island, released a statement at 1:53 p.m., confirming the outage and advising it could be several hours before everyone’s power was restored.
Power was back up and running to most members within about an hour, with scattered outages still showing on the KIUC outage map on Thursday evening — including lingering outages in the Puhi and Hanapepe areas.
KIUC said Thursday a full analysis of what happened will take several days to complete, but pointed the finger at their generators in a statement, saying: “KIUC’s grid was running at 100% renewable today, as it has routinely for thousands of hours since 2019. It appears that there may have been an issue related to one or more of our generating sources, which caused a trip and resulted in the island-wide outage.”
More information will be reported as it becomes available.
