PO‘IPU — Kule‘a will host Huaka‘i in a repeat of the opening night for the Boys Club League at the Southshore Sports Center, Friday night with the first ball being served up at 4 p.m.
During last week’s opener, Huaka‘i controlled the game tempo to easily take a 25-12 set over Kule‘a who used the break to regroup and charge back with a 13-25 set over Huaka‘i. Huaka‘i edged Kule‘a 25-22 to claim the third set and the match.
Saturday, all three teams in the league met at the Southside Sports Center starting at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Similar to the Friday night matchup, Kule‘a came out strong with a 25-17 win over Kanazuchi in the opening set.
But the boys from the Westside regrouped and came back with a 25-19 and 15-10 showing to hand Kule‘a its second match loss in as many outings.
Three teams make up the Boys Club League that feature high school-aged kane meeting on the volleyball court with coaches that have high school affiliations.
Under the current Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation guidelines, coaches have the ability to coach at club, or community level play while the KIF sits out the pandemic. The KIF’s first sanctioned event is the start of football practice in mid-June.
Players participating in club level play are not allowed to use any of the school’s equipment or facilities, and current COVID-19 health and safety rules is the norm, including the use of face masks at all times with the exception of medical reasons.
Games, one on Friday, and two on Saturday, are played to three sets with the first two sets capping at 25 points by 2 points. The third set caps at 15 with 2 points, or may continue to 25 points if there is more than 30 minutes at starting serve.
USA Volleyball play governs the night with five minutes of shared warm ups, seven minutes for the Serving Team, and seven minutes for the Receiving Team with two 30-second time outs allowed.
