LIHU‘E — The Kapaia Foundation has announced a $1,000 academic scholarship available to a graduating high school senior on Kaua‘i who demonstrates qualities passed on from Hawai‘i’s sugar plantation era workers.
LIHU‘E — The Kapaia Foundation has announced a $1,000 academic scholarship available to a graduating high school senior on Kaua‘i who demonstrates qualities passed on from Hawai‘i’s sugar plantation era workers.
These qualities include hard work, perseverance, and a positive attitude.
Last year, the Kapaia Foundation’s scholarship recipient was Brent Torres who graduated from Kaua‘i High School. He is currently majoring in Electrical Engineering at the University of Portland, Shiley School of Engineering.
Scholarship application forms are available from each high school’s senior counselor, or by emailing kapaiafoundation@gmail.com, or texting or calling 639-3606. An online application is available at scholarsapp.com.
Applications must be completed and submitted by April 9.
Kapaia Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to preserve and promote the rich history of Kapaia Valley where more than 600 people lived during the time when sugar was king. Most of the villagers worked for Lihu‘e Sugar Plantation Co. and the immigrant laborers’ work ethic set the foundation for the success enjoyed by their children, grandchildren, and generations following.
