LIHU‘E — The National Weather Service issued a high-surf warning for all north- and west-facing shores of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau, effective through 6 p.m. today.
Entering the water in these areas during the warning is very hazardous, and could cause serious injury or death. Spectators are also advised to use extreme caution along shorelines, as large, breaking waves could make it dangerous for those standing there.
The warning may be extended or modified as conditions develop. For updated information on ocean and weather alerts, visit the NWS website, weather.gov/hfo.
For up-to-date information about Kaua‘i ocean conditions and ocean safety, speak to a county lifeguard at any lifeguard station, visit hawaiibeachsafety.com, or call the Kaua‘i Fire Department Ocean Safety Bureau at 241-4984.
Can we get our mayor to close the beach access please. Someone may get hurt surfing, swimming or stub their toe on a rock. We need to protect those at risk who cannot protect themselves.
What, iSked? You got a problem with giving everyone a heads-up when conditions get dangerous? Maybe you don’t have a problem with the 10 to 15 drownings we have here on average every year? How about the lifeguards (and all of us surfers and other beachgoers) who have put their lives on the line countless times to pull others out of the surf when it gets out of control? Maybe you should try making a constructive comment instead of just being snarky and sarcastic for no apparent reason. See you out there, and I’ll help you if you get in trouble- I’ve done it many times!
