Kukui Grove sign hazardous
Kukui Grove sign hazardous
Recently, stone signage was installed at the Kukui Grove parking lot exit at Kalepa Street, opposite Ulu Maika Street.
On the Kukui side one can see the image of a nene goose, and it’s very nice. However, as one leaves the parking lot at this intersection, oncoming cars from the left on Kalepa Street cannot easily be seen, unless one is almost in the intersection, and even then, one doesn’t get a completely unobstructed view of all the oncoming traffic.
Is this the best location for this signage?
When this piece was in the planning phase, did anyone consider the view plane for oncoming traffic on Kalepa Street? This is a busy intersection and requires good visualization of traffic from all directions.

After some of the nasty comments about your letter concerning the huge potholes in the parking lot behind JJ’s Broiler I now wonder if your “goose” will be cooked yet once again…
You’ve obviously spent too much time in the ozone.
You are absolutely correct, Michael. This was a tough intersection to begin with even before the new signage was installed. I can’t imagine why no one ever considered that the new sign would be cause such a terrible visual obstruction. From now on, I plan to use one of the other exits from the mall. While the new sign is lovely, the placement of it was indeed an awful decision.
He’s right. That intersection is one of the most accident-ready in town, and now it’s worse thanks to some clueless, boneheaded decision made by someone who didn’t take the trouble to carefully consider the sign’s placement and it’s impact on safety/visibility. Come to think of it the traffic engineering of that entire stretch (between Times and Costco/Home Depot) is terrible! No left turns, plastic stanchions, misplaced exits, faded white lines…the traffic flows like a 6 yr old designed it.
That sign obstructs people views. it should be removed due to a safety hazard. There will be more crashes and I hope people will sue the mall.
