PRINCEVILLE — The North Shore Lions Club, in partnership with Aloha Roofing Supply, raised more than $50,000 during the annual golf tournament that was contested earlier this month at the Princeville Makai Golf Club.
“The tournament is the primary source of raising funds for North Shore students,” said Lion Gary Pacheco. “That’s a lot of scholarships.”
The event that featured, for this year, a sold-out field of 116 golfers, has become a premier fundraising event on Kaua‘i.
This year’s event was fueled by the partnership with Aloha Roofing Supply with strong support from National Coatings, design consultants, Sudz Car Wash, the Steve and Janine Hunt Family Foundation and Airborne Aviation.
“This great turnout, along with tremendous support from local donors, allowed us to raise more than $50,000,” said Lion Jerry Moore.
“This money will be given out to North Shore students for scholarships to help pay their education expenses. The North Shore Lions Club is also pleased to receive a matching donation of $20,000 from the Steve and Janine Hunt Family Foundation, as well as donations from other local businesses and individuals that make this a record-setting year,” Moore said.
North Shore students needing funds for their individual post-high-school education expenses can submit applications to the North Shore Lions Club by April 1.
Moore said this year’s tournament was scaled back in expectations because of the extremely small number of visitors on island, and a group-gathering limitation of not more than 25 people following the COVID-19 rules.
“Despite the challenges of not having the large tent for festivities and not having a shotgun start to maximize participation, we had a sellout of 116 golfers,” Moore said.
In addition to the annual scholarship golf tournament, the North Shore Lions Club also raises funds for local community-service projects.
“This annual golf tournament is our largest fundraising effort,” Moore said. “The funds raised are dedicated towards further education for local students who have a financial need, coupled with good grades, and a dedication to our local community.”
