FULLERTON, Calif.—The University of Hawai‘i men’s basketball team split its conference doubleheader against Cal State Fullerton with a 76-53 victory Saturday afternoon at the Titan Gymnasium.
The Warriors (3-4, 1-4) fell to the Titans 83-67 in the first game Friday night, but found redemption to win the second game of the Big West Conference series.
James Jean-Marie, Casdon Jardine, Junior Madut and Justin Webster all finished the second game with double-digit scoring efforts.
The four starters combined for 51 of the team’s 76 points, and those four nearly outscored the entire Titans team, which manufactured 53 points.
Madut had a team-leading 14 points, Jean-Marie finished with 13, and Webster and Jardine finished with 12 each in a game where Hawai‘i’s biggest lead was 23 points.
The Warriors held the lead for 27:49 of the 40-minute contest, and scored 36 of the team’s points inside the paint.
Hawai‘i also took advantage of their second-chance opportunities, outscoring the Titans 20-1 in the category.
The statistical dominance Hawai‘i displayed in the second game was in sharp contrast to the first game of the series.
In Friday’s loss, the Warriors were able to get only two players in double-digit scoring.
Webster led the team with 20 points, Madut scored 12 and Bawali Bayles finished with nine in the losing effort.
Hawai‘i had trouble containing the scoring of Tray Maddux Jr., Dante Maddux Jr., Vincent Lee and Doctor Bradley.
The four Titans’ starters combined for 70 points and had a larger output than the entire Warriors’ team accumulated in the winning effort.
The main difference in the game was the Titans capitalized on the mistakes the Warriors made.
Fullerton scored 20 points off of turnovers, 40 points in the paint, and their bench outscored the Warriors bench 36-11.
Hawai‘i’s next Big West doubleheader will come when they take on UC Irvine at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
