Healthy farms solve multiple crises
I grew up on a farm but did not pursue it as my career. Now, 70 years later, I am becoming aware that the solution to so many of Kauai’s and Humanity’s crises depends on our healthy farms.
As many of us participate this week in Ai Pono Kauai (Eat Local Challenge), I am learning more about and appreciating greatly our local, organic, and sustainable growers. Last night I educated myself further by watching the Netflix Movie, “Kiss the Ground.” I urge every one of our elected officials and all government staff responsible for the health of Kauaians to watch this movie.
I learned about the vitally important life in our soils and the carbon that soil takes in to grow our plants and food. Both address so many of our challenges, from helping us to stay healthy and to fight disease, to slowing climate change. Humanity’s future may be in the hands of growers who consciously use regenerative methods that don’t deplete the soil. According to the movie, this includes not killing the life in our soil by tilling or applying chemical pesticides.
I am not a scientist. I am a citizen concerned for the people of Kauai as we transition to greater economic diversity by engaging in sustainable, regenerative farming. Thank you for watching this movie and for considering how each of us can encourage the care of healthy soil.

Wow Molly, I remember when the water in Kalia wasn’t tainted.
Only way we can have farmers- is to have affordable housing options for them- please support ADU options on AG zoned lands!!!!
How very cute. By making a list, Molly’s outlandish, minority conspiracy theories are given false equivalency to the truth.
Hey Molly,
I congratulate your letter.
Personally, I think that Trump is a patriot and Fauci is all over the map (no masks, masks, etc.).
But, whether you and I agree on anything, I definitely like your letter.
Aloha
Time to come out of your stupor, Mark. A patriot is someone “who loves and supports his country.” That may be true for you but it certainly isn’t for the narcissist occupying the White House. As has been proven time and time again, the only thing Donald Trump loves and supports is HIMSELF.
Mark,
Certainly you’re not STILL touting 8 month old news? Fauci said masks weren’t necessary back in March, when medical experts knew very little about COVID nor the impact it was going to have. Shame on you, and everyone else that still can’t shake that antiquated info. from their Trump infested brains. Masks aren’t a perfect solution, but they help. It’s November, get up to speed, and quit relying on Trumps tweets as your news source.
We call it the Chinese virus because it’s from China! Yeaaaaaaaaaaa!:)
The scale of farming necessary for us to be “sustainable” on Kauai would not be tolerated by
the protest class on Kauai. Go ahead, Try it. Maybe in Koloa or Poipu, near the Hyatt.
Molly Jones and Mark Beeksma should probably get married as they are obviously meant for each other. Ignorance is bliss! Having said that, the Coronavirus pandemic is an incredibly serious and life-threatening situation so it would be nice to hear some thoughtful and solution-oriented comments, rather than this sort of pathetically unhinged and ultimately meaningless nonsense.
Before we go on, let’s have a moment of silence to mourn James “Kimo” Rosen’s broken dream of becoming Kauai’s Prognosticator. Proof of that is in these two examples that lay rotting before the tropical sun:
“Don’t believe the pollsters, the new world order or the fake news media. Trump is on his way to another victory and more than likely a landslide this time around.”
TGI LTE September 14, 2019
“The world, the state and our island are worried about the possible spread of COVID-19, commonly known as the coronavirus. The media has many in a frenzy over what I believe will soon pass.”
TGI LTE March 12, 2020
R.I.P. impossible dream
It takes a special kind of talent to be wrong so often. Kudo Kimo!
Yes, I couldn’t help but notice that Kimo was unusually quiet this election cycle. One would think with his prodigious mind he would have been able to predict Trump’s amazing come-from-behind victory . . . oops, sorry, my bad . . . I meant shocking loss. What happened, Kimo, forget to plug in your crystal ball? But Kimo was right about one thing — don’t believe the pollsters . . . or the fake news media — you know, organizations like Fox News, InfoWars and the like.
Mahalo Mr. Antonson for paying attention and fact-checking Kimo’s silly predictions.
