Kelmar Hi‘ilani Kanahele
Kelmar Hi‘ilani Kanahele passed away on Oct. 18, 2020, at the age of 65, at Wilcox Medical Center.
He was born on Nov. 19, 1954, in Waimea, and was a master Ni‘ihau shell-maker.
He was preceded in death by dad Donald H. Kanahele and mom Annie K. Kanahele.
He is survived by hanai sons Kawelo Schweitzer of O‘ahu, Leleo (Lokahi Orian) Knappenberger of O‘ahu and Ka‘eo Izon of O‘ahu, hanai daughters Cheryl W. (John) Kahokuloa, Hi‘ipoi (Hopate) Vakameilau, Naniwai Kanahele, Tiffany Kanahele, Hiwa Kanahele, Poni Kahale, Nuggiez Kanahele, Kahikiui (Brian) Gerardo, Nawai (Alan) Kahale and Sydney (Sanjah) Morton, grandchildren John Austin K. Kaohelauli‘i, Kelly W. Kahokulo, Kuramatsu K. Kahokuloa, Ashlee Teighlor K. Kahokuloa, Ane Kanahele Vakameilau, Briton Kanahele, Kalele Kanahele, Kulama Kanahele, Moan Kanahele, Hiwa Boy Morton, Kiai Morton, Amileah Morton, Ariah Morton, Dayson Kaohelauli‘i, Dawson Kauohelauli‘i, Kahikilani Kaohelauli‘i, Tatum Kaohelauli‘i, Luka Kanahele, Hi‘ilani Kanahele, Brianne Kanahele, Brylynn Kanahele, Bradon Kanahele, Maymay Kanahele, Lindy Delle Kanahele, Hemolele Kanahele, Wyatte Ikaika Kanahele and Oliwa Kanahele, brother Joseph Keoua (Maryann) Kanahele of Kaua‘i, and sisters Ida (Gordon) Ka‘aumoana of Ni‘ihau, Diane (Bernard) Kanahele of Kaua‘i, Annie (George) Kanahele of Kaua‘i and Kay (Isaac) Kanahele of Kaua‘i.
A walk through/talk story at Garden Island Mortuary in Lawa‘i is Saturday, Nov. 14, from 9 to 10 a.m., with a celebration of life at 10 a.m. The family suggests aloha attire and welcomes flowers.
Due to COVID-19, social distancing, face masks and sanitized hands are required.
Garden Island Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.
Lois Lydgate ‘Auntie Loey’ Coleman
Lois Lydgate Coleman of Ha‘ena, beloved wife, sister, grandmother, aunt, great-aunt, cousin and friend, passed away on Kaua‘i on Nov. 3, 2020, at the age of 91.
As generations of the Lydgate family before her, “Auntie Loey” was born Feb. 8, 1929, and raised on Kaua‘i. Lydgate Park in Wailua is named for her grandfather, the Rev. John Mortimer Lydgate.
At the age of 13, Lois, her mother and two younger sisters relocated to Seattle at the outbreak of WWII, but she moved back to her beloved Kaua‘i. She attended St. Nicholas High School in Seattle and the University of Washington, where she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. She hosted a KTOH radio show in Lihu‘e and worked with the Kaua‘i Civil Air Patrol.
An intelligent businesswoman, she and her husband, Fred, owned and operated three restaurants over the years: Ed & Don’s, The Sea Shell and the original restaurant at Lihu‘e Airport as well as the Lihu‘e Airport gift shop.
Lois sailed the Pacific with Peggy Slater, and visited the world, from Australia to Japan, Canada to Africa. Her love of literature and paying it forward to the children of the North Shore led her to become librarian at Natural Bridges School in Kilauea for a time.
In later years, Lois and Fred would spend summers at their second home in Pt. Townsend, Washington, always returning to Kaua‘i. Well-known for her love of nature, wildlife, flora and people, she was an avid photographer, and many of her note cards were in shops around the island.
Her love of traditional Hawaiian music, hula and playing the ‘ukulele with friends and family was a particular joy throughout her years. She was infectious with her welcome, joy, creativity, gladness and inspiration with friends all over the world who lived life to the fullest.
She was preceded in death by grandparents the Rev. John Mortimer and Helen Elwell Lydgate, parents John Mortimer II and Hallie Davis Lydgate, husband Fred Coleman, sister Margaret Lydgate Rinker and niece Deborah Rinker-Sims.
She is survived by sister Joan Mortimer Lydgate Burns, grandsons Fred Coleman III, Donald Coleman and William Scott Coleman, nieces Jennifer Rinker, Melody Rinker-Behrendt, Laurie Haack-Petroske and Jean Haack, nephew J. Stephen Haack, cousins Tony and Will Lydgate of Lydgate Farms, and dear friend and caregiver Cecilia Gomez.
A life celebration will be held at a future date, when her ashes will be interred at Lihu‘e Cemetery in the Lydgate family plot, and ashes spread at Ha‘ena. Kaua‘i Memorial Garden & Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Jeriann Perez Galiza
Jeriann Perez Galiza, 25, of Lihu‘e, passed away at Wilcox Medical Center on Nov. 4, 2020. She was born in Manila, Philippines on Sept. 23, 1995, and was a graduate of Kaua‘i High School Class of 2013.
She was preceded in death by paternal grandfather Pedro Galiza Sr., maternal grandparents Jimmy and Primitiva Perez and aunty Cynthia Gali.
She is survived by parents Jel “Lito” Galiza and Rica Perez, sister Tracy Ann (Tyler) Clasen of Japan, nephew Oliver Clasen, paternal grandmother Rosita Galiza, and numerous uncles, aunties and cousins.
A celebration of life will be held on Monday, Nov. 23, at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home, with visitation from 9 to 11 a.m. A private prayer service and burial will be held for family members only at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens.

Melitona ‘Meling’ ‘Millie’ Coyamin Balbarino
Melitona “Meling” “Millie” Coyamin Balbarino passed away on Oct. 19, 2020, at the age of 99, in Puhi.
She was born on March 10, 1921, in Aloguinsan, Cebu, Philippines, to Victorino and Anacleta Aliling Coyamin.
She was preceded in death by parents, husband Juan andson Larry, son-in-law Reynaldo Aranio, four grandchildren, one great-grandchild, seven sisters and one brother.
She is survived by daughter Lorena Aranio, sons Melvin (Theresa) and Patrick “Pudgie,” brother Rosario “Ross” Coyamin, 10 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 16 great-great-grand-children, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life is Friday, Nov. 13, at Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary in Koloa, with visitation at 10 a.m. and services at 11 a.m. Due to COVID-19 guidelines, face coverings and physical distancing will be required. Inurnment will be at a later date.
