Evolution of society; our choice now
Evolution of society; our choice now
Adding to the recent commentary on subliminal messaging, liminal-messaging dangers were documented/reported by Netflix with “Social Dilemma.” This video interviews many of the creative minds behind today’s social-media platforms. Their good intentions have had unintended consequences.
Free isn’t free. We pay in information. We volunteer TONS of data that is now digitized into predictable behavior. Statisticians can predict social behavior almost as accurately as the hard sciences can calculate trajectories. Individual behavior is now predictable. That’s profiling, for better or worse.
The accuracy is a result of the volume. We lose it here. The corollary is that individuals cannot be predicted. That used to be the world we lived in. With our addiction to screens, our behavior is measurably predictable.
It was also said that there is no cure for affluence. The current worldwide economic trauma is that cure. Affluence can no longer be taken for granted. My apathy has been destroyed.
We do still have choice. We’ve just received our cure for affluence. Our recovery depends on our informed choice, collaboration or chaos.
Regardless of what the media is sensationalizing, polarization benefits no one. We need to work together, as partners, to make the “New Norm” beneficial and equitable for all. Look beyond the headlines and act locally. Kaua‘i can lead the way, as we have throughout history.

MAhalo Mike Curtis! “Kaua‘i can lead the way, as we have throughout history”! BOOM kanani!.
Excellent!
Thank you for your thoughtful letter. As explained in the “Social Dilemma” documentary, every post and “like” and link we click – and how long we spend reading those links and articles – is gathered into our “profile.” The algorithms then create content and advertise more merchandise and like-minded articles that further reinforce our thinking and preferences.
I learned here on Kaua‘i how to say “Hmm, I hadn’t thought it that way,” and when my ego isn’t too defensive, how to say “Hmm, you might be right” when encountering different perspectives.
TED Talks has a few Living Room Conversations presentations. I’m willing to learn – just please don’t start our conversations by calling me names or pigeon-holing me as your inflammatory polar opposite who couldn’t possibly understand things your way. I’m not a feminazi.
Careful what you all wish for! Opening the Island without any quarantine is beyond words…
