WAIMEA — The Kaua‘i Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, including its Advisory Council Chair Timmy Albao and membver Wilma Chandler, along with Grace Domingo Delos Reyes of the county Agency on Elderly Affairs and Kaua‘i RSVP director Donna Lynn Loo, wrapped up their 2020 Sept. 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance project Wednesday with the delivery of 80 care packages to front-line workers at the Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital.
The delivery to KVMH marked the second day of deliveries of more than 350 care packages that were created by the Kaua‘i RSVP Advisory Council to demonstrate appreciation for the island’s medical first responders, especially during this time of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Care packages included an assortment of gift cards, gift certificates, gifts, and assorted sweets including kulolo. These were provided by donations from the
community done in a drive-thru format with appointments being made ahead of the drop-offs.
All Kaua‘i RSVP volunteers complied with the appropriate COVID-19 rules and guidelines, including having face masks, practicing social distancing, and delivering to the front entrance outside the hospitals.
The Sept. 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance is an annual tribute to the 9/11 victims and survivors, and the remarkable community response that followed. Participants commemorate the tragedy by demonstrating kindness and generosity to one another.
The Kaua‘i RSVP started in 1973 under the sponsorship of the AEA. The program is a SeniorCorps program under the Corporation for National and Community Service, and provides volunteer opportunities for persons 55 years and older to remain active, contributing members of the community.
