LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i Chess team will be playing chess against Oxford University’s A Team Monday, starting at 8:30 a.m.
“While we will be the underdogs. We have earned the right to face them because of two team victories in the first three rounds of the 2020 World Team Online Amateur Chess Championship competition,” said Damian Nash, Kaua‘i Chess team captain.
The match can be streamed online at chess.com//live#tm=187675.
Nash previewed the lineup, saying “Kaua’i already had a strong team with myself, Chad Badgett, Fernando Ramos and Kaua‘i High School prodigy Valor Mexia. Last month, the island gained one of the top young talents from O‘ahu when Likeke Aipa accepted a job as an engineer at the Pacific Missile Range Facility. His 4-0 record playing for Kaua‘i has made the team highly competitive in the 80-team field.”
The matches will also be broadcast live on Twitch TV starting at 8:30 a.m. Monday at twitch.tiv/1more1time.
The Hawaiian Islands’ chess team from O‘ahu is also 2-1 in league play, and will face Edinburgh University this weekend.
