KALAHEO — Members of the Rotary Club of Po‘ipu Beach were showered with thank-yous and applause Saturday from the steady stream of walkers passing by the pavilion at Kukuiolono Park and Golf Course.
Armed with buckets of paint, paint brushes and rollers, more than a dozen Rotarians took advantage of increasing trade winds to re-paint the pavilion as one of the club’s works project.
“This project was originally scheduled for April,” said Ted Faigle, the Kaua‘i assistant governor for Rotary District 5000. “But then the COVID-19 hit and we went to Zoom meetings. We finally got everybody together today to get this project done.”
Ann Tremain, one of the club’s newest members, was among the workforce that drew approving looks from the walkers enjoying the nearly-three-mile park loop.
“I was initiated into the club during one of the Zoom meetings,” Tremain said. “Today I get to meet a lot of the members in person.”
Faigle said this living with the COVID-19, and especially the return to school and distance learning, is hard on a lot of the club’s members.
“The younger members who have children in school are having a difficult time juggling work and helping their children,” Faigle said. “They have a hard time working in the meetings, even with Zoom. The good thing about these work projects is people get to come out and work with each other in person. It’s been a while since everyone had a chance to come together like this.”
