LIHU‘E — Sunday, the state Department of Health reported 220 new positive cases of coronavirus.
Most of the new cases were reported on O‘ahu. None of the new cases is on Kaua‘i.
This brought Hawai‘i’s cumulative total to 5,042 across the islands. Of those cases, 6% have required hospitalization, and 93% were residents. The statewide death toll remains at 40.
Lt. Gov. Josh Green said that there are 143 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19, including 35 patients in intensive-care units and 25 on ventilators.
Kaua‘i reported zero new cases Saturday as well, so there are currently seven active cases, all in isolation.
Between Friday and Saturday, three more individuals were placed under a state Department of Health-directed quarantine due to being a close contact of a confirmed case. The total under quarantine now sits at 40.
Of the 54 cumulative cases, the island has seen, 47 are attributed to residents and seven to visitors.
Additionally, 47 cases have recovered or have been transferred to another jurisdiction.
Note: This story has been edited to reflect the accurate number of people in isolation on Kauai.
Wait a minute:
Of the 54 cumulative cases, the island has seen, 47 are attributed to residents and seven to visitors? Anybody getting a clue here? You’ve trashed the main source of income for most residents for 7 cases? Have you considered seceding from the Union? The Spirit of Aloha is dead and buried.
So… let more sick people in then? That’s your solution?
And how many have died from the dead economy? How many more will die?
When will Kauai be allowed to breathe again?
I have no idea how many people have died because of the economy of the island. Please enlighten me.
There are so many issues about Covid-19 that go unreported because they do not fit the left-wing narrative about the virus. How many lives were lost due to the economy? Suicides are not well reported on Kauai, but a few months into Covid Lockdown there was a week with seven suicides on Kauai. Were the suicides all Covid related? Probably not, but with no income, living on handouts, and fear of eviction….Covid had to be a factor in at least some of those deaths. How many more have commited suicide since then?
How about the impact of isolation from sheltering in place? Have the stress of not working added to health issues that lead to death? How about the impact of medical treatments that were delayed because of the lockdown?
Still think that the covid economy hasn’t had an impact on the death rates on Kauai?
Hey UD, do you have any specifics for any of that?
If there is a statewide (known) infection load of 5,042 and 40 associated deaths, the mortality rate for CoVID-19 in Hawaii is just UNDER eight tenths of ONE percent (.0079).
With 54 (known) Kauai cases and 0 associated deaths, the Co-VID-19 mortality rate on Kauai is 0%.
Note that quarantines and masks are measures that are taken to prevent spread. They are not treatments. They do not affect mortality rates, which are determined by the number of deaths among those who are infected.
Personally, I think 0 deaths is a good thing.
Hmmm… interesting stats…my friend’s brother living on Kauai just passed away from CoVid pneumonia on 8/16. How accurate are the stats?
There is a minuscule possibility I could die but, more probable, I would feel like junk for a few days. Are we busy living or busy dying?
6% is more than I’m willing to risk. If you’re up for it, though, I recommend a vacation to AZ or FL.
Great news! No new cases, 5 active, no cases currently hospitalized, mandatory 14 quarantine or inter island and mainland travel, social distance and mask regulations. Can someone please educate me on why schools need to be 100% distance learning for 28 days? Limiting gatherings, and lets not forget the closing of polihale. Here’s the direct quote from our mayor Kawakami “Let’s speak frankly. Polihale was shut down because people were not following the rules,” Kawakami said in a Wednesday statement to The Garden Islands.” We all saw the huge masses of people gathering from polihale to haena for holiday weekends or special occasions. And according to covid tracking we had a cluster just one family, and a few travel related cases. Time to step up and make the change for whats best for the health of our community and kids. No one wants to see your stay at home recipes or stupid TikTok dances anymore, it may have been cute 5 months ago. But this is ridiculous already.
My wife and I have been coming to this beautiful island for 20 years. We love the people, have learned and totally respect the traditions and believe we understand and embrace the spirit of aloha. We visit twice a year for 2 weeks each visit (January and September). It certainly looks like we sadly won’t be able to visit this September as a 14 day quarantine will consume are whole vacation. I haven’t canceled our plans yet and hope a good resolution can be found to protect the residents of Kauai. We would be more than willing to be tested prior to coming to Kauai and again on arrival, even if it might mean we would have to quarantine for 2 days and we would have no problem paying for the tests. So I will hold off on canceling and will monitor the developments and pray a resolution can be found that will allow to visit “Paradise” again in September.
God Bless all of you.

Your governor is killing the economy of the Hawaiian Islands for decades to come. I was married in Princeville 25+ years ago, and Kauai is special to me. It pains me to see Kauai self destruct. No matter what type of isolation you try the virus will eventually find you. You are delaying the inevitable while destroying your economy and your people. You will be a bankrupt state taking decades to ever return to your previous success. I morn the Aloha spirit that once existed. I think that once you finally open you will find your visitors have found paradise elsewhere. No on on the mainland will be willing to bail you out. You can watch your luxury resorts decay and dream of past glory and be assured that no one will forget or forgive the isolationist attitude shown.
I’m willing to wait for you to get a better sense of aloha before you return. The island will survive until then, I’m sure. If Kaua’i is special to you, you should be willing to let it go for what, one season, one year, to make sure it stays healthy.
Really people, if you had strong evidence that you had a 6% chance of killing your new grandchild upon visiting it in the nursery, would you stay away?
We have plans to visit or favorite island of Kauai on September 13th. We live in Southern Oregon. No problem getting the Covid test before we leave!. I thought up until a few hours ago we would be able to go ahead with plans, now it looks like Ige has changed everything again. Delaying until October. I can understand being cautious about Oahu but not Kauai! Should I canceour lreservations or wait. Why is he against the Covid test all of a sudden!
