LIHU‘E — “Did you vote?”
Suffragette Alice Paul, portrayed by Holly Harris, wanted to know during the videotaping for the Celebrating Women — A Retrospective exhibit that opens Monday at the Kaua‘i Society of Artists gallery at Kukui Grove Center.
Paul is one of the women being celebrated in Celebrating Women of Leadership &Courage, an event honoring the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment on Aug. 18, 1920, that gave women the right to vote, through the American Association of University Women timeline of the suffragette movement.
The video produced with the help of Elliot Lucas of the Kaua‘i Film Academy located adjacent to the KSA gallery is just a part of the exhibit honoring women leaders of the past, and
discussing the future of supporting women.
Central to the exhibit is the “Celebrating Women of Leadership &Courage,” an art show that incorporates the AAUW’s timeline of the suffragette movement that Paul was involved in.
A special program on Aug. 18 will bring together the AAUW Kaua‘i chapter, Girl Scouts of Hawai‘i, the Mokihana Club, the YWCA of Kaua‘i, and the Zonta Clubs of Kaua‘i and Hanalei, which will not only celebrate the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage but honor women leaders from the past.
The gathering of these girls’ and women’s organizations will take place from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the KSA gallery, which will feature special opening hours from noon until 8 p.m.
Expanding on women’s suffrage, the Kaua‘i Society of Artists presents Celebrating Women: A Retrospective, a curated art show honoring outstanding artwork resonating with the theme of celebrating women created by Kaua‘i artists.
The exhibit is open to the public from Aug. 10 through 23 from noon until 4 p.m. There will be special hours on Aug. 18 from noon to 8 p.m. for the Celebrating Women of Leadership &Courage presentation.
