Did you see the mask? Denise Kaufman (she’s Tora Smart’s mom in addition to being an Island School founding mother) wanted to know as she engaged in coversation with Lindsey Kamm (those Island School founding mothers are everywhere) and Mary Alfiler (do you realize she was a musician with the Ace of Cups?), Saturday during the final Strings of Joy ‘ukulele package distribution in front of Jamba Juice (where was Mark Bonilla? They were hopping) at Kukui Grove Center in Lihu‘e.

Kudos to Novelyn Hinazumi and her Child &Family Service ‘ohana, which got help from many community hearts and hands to host the Festival of Hope for Families distribution at Kekaha Neighborhood Center, where Grove Farm’s Shawn Shimabukuro, Linda Inouye, Dave Hinazumi and Beau Acoba were busy helping pump out produce and gift cards as part of the Community Wins! program…and mahalo, Shawn Shimabukuro, for putting a name — Kukulu Kaiaulu — to all those events that we’ve enjoyed.
This includes the Puhi Park Produce (coach Todd Ozaki and his family were there), where Grove Farm President and CEO Warren Haruki (yes, the Warren Haruki tomato is real, master gardeners. I know, you’re still closed because the University of Hawai‘i is closed) surprised everyone by visiting the park during his trip home (Warren said his mother found some for sale in Kapa‘a, but her friend bought out the supply before she could get any).
The word of Kenny Ishii’s absence caught the wind, so he visited Puhi Park Produce Saturday with Daryl Dobashi’s friend Shawna Eisendrath, so missed that cattle egret that followed Fred Javellana to Mayette Loseto’s van. What is Fred’s secret?
