HONOLULU — Hawaii reported a record 207 cases of COVID-19 on Monday, though state officials said more than half were the result of delayed reporting over the weekend.
The Hawaii COVID-19 Joint Information Center attributed the delays to private clinical laboratory reporting issues. It said 114 of the cases were due to these issues.
State Department of Health Director Bruce Anderson said in a statement that Hawaii is experiencing spikes in cases similar to many mainland states. He said in most cases, the new infections can be traced to people who have let down their guard.
Of the total, 198 were from Oahu, seven were from Maui and two from Hawaii Island.
Hawaii’s case numbers have increased sharply over the past week. The percentage of tests with positive results averaged 4.5 percent over the past seven days.
The number of infections is thought to be far higher because many people have not been tested, and studies suggest people can be infected with the virus without feeling sick.
