LIHU‘E — Honolulu National Weather Service forecaster Pete Donaldson recommends citizens of Kaua‘i monitor the progress of Tropical Storm Boris, which formed as a tropical depression Wednesday and grew to a tropical storm Thursday.
As of Thursday afternoon, Tropical Storm Boris was 1,675 miles southeast of Kaua‘i and 1,900 miles southwest of the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula. It is moving westward at nine mph, navigating the warm waters of the East Pacific Ocean, heading toward the Central Pacific.
Donaldson says the tropical storm is too far away for forecasters to assess the storm’s impact on the island of Kaua‘i.
AccuWeather meteorologists say they are expecting the storm to continue to intensify, but the Central Pacific Hurricane Center said Boris is forecasted to turn west or west-southwest and weaken into a depression by Friday or Friday night.
“This is the sort of system that is great to keep an eye on,” Donaldson said. “It doesn’t have an impact on the climate right now.”
It is still important to continue to monitor these storms to be prepared for any incoming danger.
“The closest the system would get to the island wouldn’t be until the middle of next week,” Donaldson said. The system is too far away for us to understand what type of impact it will have in Kaua‘i.”
