For this reason, until further notice, the Kuhio Highway Southbound contraflow between Kapule Highway and the Kapa‘a Temporary Bypass Road is suspended for Monday through Saturday service.
Islandwide travel during the pandemic continues to be low. According to a June 12 Google Mobility Report, there has been a 51% decrease in transit to retail and recreation, and a 32% decrease in workplace movement. Kaua‘i has some of the lowest rates of movement in the state.
The Kaua‘i Police Department reported nearly a 40% decrease in traffic incidents. From the first of this year to June 16, KPD has reported 503 incidents. In the same span last year, KPD reported 826.
There has been a decrease in both major and minor traffic incidents, according to KPD numbers.
HDOT maintenance crews scheduled for the set-up of the contraflow are being relocated for landscape maintenance such as grass trimming around guardrails to maintain sight distance.
The department said it will continue to monitor the Wailua corridor daily and will resume operations when necessary.
