LIHU‘E — One new case of COVID-19 was confirmed on Kaua‘i Thursday, and 18 were diagnosed in Honolulu, most of which are Hawai‘i residents.
County of Kaua‘i announced the new confirmed case of COVID-19 — the first in more than two months — saying the case brings the cumulative total for the county to 22.
This is the first new case for the island since early April. The new case is a male adult resident whose positive test results were received Thursday.
The Department of Health is conducting a case investigation and contact tracing. The patient will be in isolation for the duration of illness and all close contacts will be in quarantine. Both the case and the contacts will be monitored daily by the Department of Health.
“As the investigation has just begun, we do not yet have information about possible sources of infection, including whether or not there may have been travel-related exposure,” said Dr. Janet Berreman, Kaua‘i District Health Officer.
The new case emphasizes the need for the public to continue to heed emergency rules and recommendations to avoid exposure.
Meanwhile, the Hawai‘i Dept. of Health (DOH) reported an additional 18 cases of COVID-19 Thursday, all of which were diagnosed in Honolulu. Fifteen of these new cases are in Hawai‘i residents and the residency of the other three remains under investigation.
“This spike in cases and other recent daily spikes have been expected as people begin to move around more freely and more businesses are reopening,” said Dr. Sarah Park, State Epidemiologist.
She continued, “It’s important to point out, that the vast majority of the cases we’re seeing in the state are being spread by what we call community-associated infection. Only a handful of recent cases have been detected in travelers, known as travel-associated infection.”
Health experts and state leaders are daily reminding Hawai‘i residents to continue with safe practices, including physical distancing, use of face masks, hand washing and staying home when sick. “These steps altogether,” Dr. Park explains, “are the single best things each and every one of us can and should do, not only to protect our own health, but the health of all of our loved ones and particularly our kupuna.”
At the Hale Nani Rehabilitation and Nursing Center on O‘ahu, a total of ten (10) cases of coronavirus have been confirmed. Two are workers at the facility and the other eight are residents. Hale Nani implemented aggressive infection control measures as an immediate response to the initial case. Active monitoring and repeat testing is being performed, as recommended by DOH, for all residents and staff. So far 307 tests of staff have come back negative. All but one of the cases identified at the facility, to date, are in people who reside in or work on a single unit.
Dr. Sarah Kemble, Deputy State Epidemiologist explained, “When there has been exposure in a health care setting like this, resulting increase in infections are possible and unfortunate, but not unexpected. We could continue to see a number of new cases over the next two weeks.” She went onto to explain that the DOH response has been tiered and focused first on getting residents and workers in the affected unit tested first, followed by testing for the entire facility, and then repeat (serial) testing.
The Hawai‘i House of Representatives confirmed today that a person working at the State Capitol is one of those who tested positive for COVID-19. House leaders say the person wore a mask at work and stayed home when symptoms first developed, so the risk of infection to others is low. The state legislature is scheduled to go back into session next Monday, June 22, though the State Capitol will remain closed to the public.
The health department’s investigation of this case is ongoing. It’s working closely with the legislature to address all concerns and to ensure any close contacts of the positive case are in quarantine and being monitored.
According to the CDC there is a near 99.8% recovery rate in healthy people, so why are healthy people being punished instead of quarantining unhealthy and infected people? CDC says we can only get it from saliva from an infected person…why are all the rest of us losing our businesses, our right to travel to other states (constitutional right, BTW), our right to gather, because 22 people out of approx. 70,000 got infected? 60 years ago we wouldn’t have allowed this dictatorial subjugation. Maybe our “leaders” should base their decisions on science instead of politically enacted panic.
Please show us where the CDC says you can only get this through saliva. It’s a respiratory illness.
Instead of contact tracing, can’t you give some information on the sick person. Did they travel, ride the bus, go shopping, attend a protest ect.
Mean while the guys working on the Kapaa bridge are coning in from Oahu to work..This may affect us in the efforts to control the Covid Outbreaks..

What? Is this true? When did Kauai County acquire the Right to arrest and imprison someone because they might test positive for one of the billions of viruses that are inside of human beings? And, they arrested and imprisoned his family, too???
If this is true, then everyone of us can be arrested and imprisoned for suspicion of having a virus without due process or just cause.

Oscar, Not just salvia did the CDC say. Healthy people can be non-symptomatic spreaders. Are you infected? Tests can reveal, not just symptoms. Wear your mask and social distance, please.
