LIHU‘E – The County of Kaua‘i Emergency Management Agency (KEMA) invites the public to join the County’s planning team and Steering Committee as they update the County’s Multi-Hazard Mitigation and Resiliency Plan (MHMRP).
The Steering Committee will hold a virtual meeting at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 18, to begin reviewing the existing MHMRP and mapping out the steps in the update process.
“Mitigation and resiliency are best achieved when done as a whole-community,” said KEMA Administrator Elton Ushio. “We encourage the public to participate in the planning process.”
During this plan update, County staff and community members will work in tandem to identify risks, assess capabilities, and formulate a strategy to reduce vulnerability and increase resiliency to natural disasters that affect our county.
Hazard Mitigation is defined as actions taken to reduce the long-term loss of life and damage to property by lessening the impact of natural disasters. Resiliency is defined as the capacity of individuals, communities, institutions, businesses and systems to survive, adapt to and thrive in the chronic stresses and acute shocks they experience. These disasters and acute shocks include floods, severe storms, and pandemics, among many others.
The updated MHMRP will lay out a strategy to reduce the impact of natural disasters and promote the county’s resilience to those acute shocks. KEMA has developed a survey to provide another opportunity for the public to contribute to the 2020 MHMRP update. The 12-question survey will cover hazard awareness, preparedness, mitigation, and response.
