LIHU‘E — The Zonta Club of Kaua‘i encourages everyone to wear denim on Wednesday, April 29, to help promote peace over violence and to help raise awareness of the damaging impacts of rape and assault.
Though some of the usual aspects of the annual event have had to be put on hold due to social distancing and other COVID-19-related orders ongoing on Kaua‘i, the club urges people to participate in the annual Denim Day and to use #zontaclubofkauai to keep the event going strong.
The annual Denim Day was created in response to the 1977 rape of an 18-year-old girl in which a judge argued the girl’s choice to wear tight jeans amounted to consent because she had to aid in removing those jeans.
Since then, wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual harassment, abuse, assault and rape, the Zonta Club of Kaua‘i states on their website.
Wear denim on April 29 and share photos on Instagram @ZontaClubofKauai808 or on Facebook @ZontaClubOfKauai.
