• Editor’s note: Questions about stay-at-home orders can be submitted to tinyurl.com/TGIQ-A and The Garden Island staff will do our best to find you an answer by contacting county officials and Kauai District Health Officer Dr. Janet Berreman. Be aware these answers are informed with the latest directives from officials and can change as official rules and recommendations change. Contact the Hawai‘i Department of Health or your physician for official COVID-19 symptoms and steps to take if you think you have the virus.
Q: Kauaians want to help each other, such as during the recent floods. But with this virus, many rules of self-isolation make it difficult to give. People have little money to spare, but really want to help those who may not have enough food, or may need clothes. Is any group organizing ways for the people of Kaua‘i to help out each other without breaking the emergency rules, and how are they communicating to the community?
A: St. William Church hosts food pantries in Ha‘ena, Kapa‘a and Hanalei. Volunteers can get involved in food distribution, acquiring food, and more. Call 346-2850 for more information.
Malama Kaua‘i is looking for Kupuna & Keiki CSA Box Delivery volunteers islandwide, as well as paid opportunities for delivery drivers and food program support. For these opportunities, volunteers must be over 18, and have not been ill or traveled off-island in the last 21 days nor be in close contact with anybody who has. More information can be found on malamakauai.org.
Massive Masks for Kaua‘i is sewing face masks for Kaua‘i residents. The collaborative effort is using donated materials for first responders, health-care workers and other essential workers. To order, volunteer or donate, contact massivemasksforkauai@gmail.com.
Those already sewing masks can contact Hawai‘i Pacific Health’s Volunteer Program Coordinator Tomoko Ouchi at 245-1144 or Tomoko.Ouchi@WilcoxHealth.org. The medical center will disinfect all donations prior to use. Wilcox Health Center is also accepting unopened surgical masks, N-95 respirators, medical gowns and exam and surgical gloves at the entrance of the medical center.
Q: My driver license expires in early May. Where and when can I renew it?
A: Currently, the county Department of Finance Driver Licensing division is closed to the public until April 30, according to the county’s website. The division is scheduled to open up for regular services on May 4.
The state has granted a 90-day waiver on all expired driver’s licenses and state identification cards which expire between March 23 and May 15.
