• Editor’s note: The following letters express thanks to the essential workers in the community from fourth-graders in Sara Graves’ class at St. Theresa School in Kekaha. These letters were also sent to various hospitals and essential organizations on the island.
Dear doctors
I am a 4th-grade student at St. Theresa School in Kekaha.
I just wanted to thank you for trying to get people to recover from the coronavirus. We know you are doing all you can to help. You are so brave because everyone is scared of getting COVID-19, but you are still working to try and help people. I appreciate you so much. It makes me nervous to think about coronavirus because I have a newborn baby sister at home and I don’t want her or anyone else to get sick. I’m also scared that my grandparents might get sick. Even if we do get it, I hope we’ll be OK. I really hope you can help people get better. Thank you for working as hard as you can.

Dear government employees
I am a 4th-grade student at St. Theresa School in Kekaha.
I am so grateful that there are people like you out there willing to help fight this pandemic.
My family and I are very thankful for what you are doing to help. We hope that together as an island/state we can reduce community spread. I wish that tourists would stop coming and residents would stop traveling then bringing the sickness back. I’m glad that some people are trying to stop the spread, and we have to influence others to do the same. Our people with weak immune systems are at higher risk, and we have to do something that will influence other people who don’t have access to the news or internet. This could benefit one of your family members, or even friends who are weak in their immune systems, so if any people would not like to help by stopping the spread, they should think about their family. This message could also go for stubborn family members.
This is a serious thing going on, and I think everyone would like it to go away. It’s hard to get through life right now with this pandemic on our hands, but God is with us and He knows what He is doing.

Dear doctors, paramedics and nurses
I am a 4th-grade student at St. Theresa School in Kekaha. Thank you for all your hard work and your dedication. Thank you for being brave and protecting our community. I’m thankful for you guys because you guys are still out there working. You are awesome because you never give up. Thank you for also helping people who are sick and taking care of them. Thank you for showing us how to protect us from the virus. Everybody in this world loves you. Thank you for doing what you can and trying to come up with cures. You are very appreciated.

I am a 4th-grade student at St. Theresa School in Kekaha.
Thank you for working tirelessly around the clock to deliver many supplies, food and packages to our local stores and businesses. I know it’s a busy time for you. I appreciate all of your hard work and commitment to perform a very important and demanding job. Your delivery services are helping my family and others receive the necessary supplies and food we need to live. Thank you for delivering medical supplies, medicine and protective gear to our local hospitals. These medical supplies, medicines and protective gear will help our doctors and nurses treat sickly people in need. Thank you for delivering goods to stock up our stores. Thank you for delivering food to schools to help make meals for our less-fortunate families. Thank you for delivering our mail and packages to our post offices. We hope that you continue your great work. Thank you again for keeping this country moving.

Dear nurses
I am a 4th-grade student at St. Theresa School in Kekaha. I want to thank you for taking care of everyone that might have the COVID-19 or to people that are sick. My mom is a nurse at KVMH and she has a lot of patients that are on drugs or that are sick, and I get worried that she might get the COVID-19 and she gets quarantined. So I just want to say thanks for helping people who are sick. My mom teaches me things about COVID-19 and how to get it. She also told me to use soap, not hand sanitizer, because it washes away the good and bad germ in your hands. I love my mom and I think being a nurse is a really cool job, but it’s also a hard thing to go through. And that I might want to be a nurse when I grow up.
And I might want to help people get better in good ways that don’t hurt as much.

I also want to thank you for being brave to work with sick people. You have to work long hours away from your family. That is hard. But I am happy you are helping people. I will pray for you. And hope nothing happens to you.

Dear doctors
I am a 4th-grade student at St. Theresa School in Kekaha.
I may not like going to the doctor but I really appreciate all the work you guys are doing to keep me and the world around us safe. It’s probably hard for you to be working with a bunch of sick people, but it’s for our own good to keep us safe. I’m proud of you and all the people who are keeping us safe. I wish all of you guys hope to stay safe and not get anything from the people you are working with to make them feel better.
I think that doctors play a very important role in life because if we didn’t have doctors then who would help us get better besides our parents? Thank you so much for all you are doing to protect me and others. You are all appreciated and loved. God bless you all.
