LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i police Friday arrested Adam Schwarze, 36, of ‘Aiea, O‘ahu, and Desiree Marvin, 31, of Alexandria, Virginia, for violating the state’s COVID-19 mandatory 14-day quarantine emergency order.
They arrived on a flight from O‘ahu via Southwest Airlines.
According to a preliminary report, the couple was contacted around 4:20 p.m. shortly after before exiting Lihu‘e Airport at the Ahukini Road checkpoint. The visitors were advised of the state’s 14-day quarantine order and the requirement to proceed directly to their place of lodging.
After driving away from the checkpoint, they were observed turning in the opposite direction of their stated accommodations. A traffic stop was subsequently initiated, where they were informed again of the 14-day quarantine order and advised to proceed directly to their accommodations.
At approximately 5:50 p.m, a Kaua‘i Police Department officer observed the visitors’ unoccupied rental vehicle in the parking lot of Foodland in Princeville Shopping Center.
After exiting the grocery store, the couple was placed under arrest for violation of the mandatory 14-day quarantine order and transported to cellblock where they posted bail.
They have an upcoming court date and could each face misdemeanor charges of up to $5,000 in fines and/or up to one year in prison.
Visitors are required to quarantine in proper accommodations for 14 days, leave the island or face arrest for subsequent offense under the governor’s order.
KPD will continue to conduct random quarantine-compliance checks to ensure the health and safety of the Kaua‘i community against the spread of COVID-19.
This virus won’t abate for over a year, perhaps as long as two years, when a vaccine is finally developed and 300 million Americans are inoculated. By that time Kauai will be in economic ruins. Those residents who can flee to the mainland will do so, probably starting in a couple of months. Arresting this young couple is a bit like Germany in the Nazi era.
looks like the police, county, council and State are lining themselves up for another lawsuit…some of these travelers, like it or not, will have a good case;
stopping to buy groceries, after making a wrong turn out of the airport is a crime, but the Puhi Farmers market is open, cause Grove Farm says it okay….just saying;
the police, the mayor, the counsel, even the governor do not have the power to create new laws…..only the Legislature can pass laws…..fine line we are walking, even though we all need to shelter in place !!
They had to get food too last during the 14 day quarantine. What are they suppose to starve as they shelter in place…The state should be notifying them that there are delivery services for groceries. Most likely knowing Kaua’i this is NOT the case. This is insane. Give them latex gloves and face masks or require it when they book their flight so they can get food on their way to quarantine. I’m sure they are not the only ones that head to the grocer on their way to quarantine.
But don’t we all need food? How were they to get the food they needed for their 14-day quarantine? Were they given a chance to buy food before they were cited?
One thing missing in the news account is, they posted the $100. bail so they’re not in jail. They are now cruising on Kauai while awaiting court date. Were they put on the next flight back where they came from after being processed?
What provisions have been made for people to have food for 2 weeks without going to the grocery store, if they are not in a hotel / motel? Are incoming visitors informed about how to do this at the same time they are told to enter quarantine?
Ahh, duh . . . one must eat, they were buying food and toiletries; not an unreasonable immediate NECESSARY.
I hope every last one of the scumbag Politicians that have infringed on everyone’s constitutional rights gets jailed for life after all this is over; or before, for that matter. You quarantine the SICK, not the healthy.
People are being held prisoners without due process and illegally. Pen all the Bullsh_t ‘orders’ you want Governor and Mayor . . . you have NO LEGAL RIGHT to IMPRISON Healthy.
They broke the quarantine even just getting a rental car. Anyone arriving should pay for monitored quarantine, the transportation to location, and make sure they don’t potentially expose any residents. For each arrival, our lockdown will be extended, and our kids can’t go back to school apparently until there is 4 weeks without a case- how do they intend on that ever happening when there people keep streaming and aren’t securely monitored and locked away until cleared by a test? Please Kawakami, secure our boarders so all this sacrifice we make won’t be ruined by people like this arriving, and they are. Kaua’i could be an example of eradicating the virus, but we need all arrivals secured and cleared only by a test to make sure they are not parasympathetic. Kaua’i strong, Kaua’i wise. Please.
For the health of the local people of Kauai, we need to have a travel ban on Hawaii for 5 years. The ban needs to be enforced by the Stat of Hawaii AND the Federal Government just in case the State of Hawaii gets hungry and changes its mind.

KPD, good police work. Thank you.
Excellent! I wish all states were this proactive.

Good hope they enjoy their stay in the jail. Why is anyone going to any of the islands right now for a vacation, selfish idiots
