Person limit should be reflected in building size
Person limit should be reflected in building size
I fully understand the need for social distancing and appreciate the risks that grocery stores and their employees are taking by keeping open as an essential service for the public. What I don’t understand is the consistent 50 person limit in stores as big as Costco and as small as Waimea Big Save. Shouldn’t there be a square foot to person ratio?

KCCC needs COVID-19 Protocols
Esteemed Council Members,
Please take a moment to think about the safety of our Ohana living in KCCC. Are there any NEW protocols in place to protect their health from COVID 19? The very overcrowded conditions would make the 6 foot restrictions all the rest of us are being asked to employ almost impossible. These are not “throw away people” they are our families and friends. Please share with me any information about the people imprisoned at KCCC as soon as there is information available. Family members of those inside are not able to hear from their relations. This is frightening for those inside and those waiting for family to return home. Please help in any way you can. Mahalo.
Sincerely,
Jo Amsterdam, Kalaheo
The average Costco is 144,000 square feet. From a search on the early reporting of the store coming to Kauai back in 2006, it appears Kauai’s Costco is of this average size. This is probably total floor space not accounting for product shelves, registers, food court food prep area, butcher area, the pharmacy, the automotive center, etc. Let’s say half of the space (I suspect it is more) is taken up by things where customers can not actually be. That would leave 72,000 square feet of space for customers. With the 6-feet social distancing guidelines, each person would ideally occupy a space of between 114 (circular) and 144 (square) square feet. That would suggest as many as 500 to 630 people in the store at once. But this also includes the staff of the store.
Personally I would not want to be in that store with 500 to 630 other people during a pandemic. Not even 200 other people. It sounds like a nightmare.
Perhaps Costco has decided that they want to take extra precautions to protect patrons and their staff. I’d say this is a good thing.
Jo:
Consider also the mayor’s threat to actually put people in jail and fine them $5k for violating his dictatorial edict. Derek seems incapable of logical, rational thought. Take people away from being able to go outdoors, shut down their jobs…but if they really need to work well then round them up and put them in already crowded jails. Makes perfect sense…right?

Kapaa Post Office allows one person at a time, and therefore only one cashier is open. Clearly, there is enough square footage to serve more customers while still heeding the law.
Wow, accusing our mayor of irrational thought. Methinks, my dear that you should look in the mirror first. Are you following protocols? DO you cough and sneeze and touch your face in public and then touch things? Are you keeping six feet away from people? DO you mock people and laugh at them and tell everyone its a hoax, or the flu, or that “you feel just great?”. You are the reason for all of these guidelines and people like you. You think that authorities who are trying to save us from ourselves, and protect the people of Kauai are “Irrational”. It is you who are irrational. One might wonder when it is you yourself who may be screaming for a ventilator, from your obvious lack of understanding, or mental capacity to acknowledge something is wrong and you could be the dreaded super-spreader, who has the nerve to write such drivel. When it comes your time, or someone that you infect with your ignorance dies, can you live with the guilt of your stupidity and your ignorant comments? If you are going to insult the Mayor for doing his job, and print in words on a comment site, expect to be called out for it. You are not Kauai, or kauai”s people, obviously. If you think you are, no matter of birth and race, now you are not considered one of us. Periold. Take yourself off to a place where they are also in denial, and cry and moan when your time comes to need care becasue ofd your lack of brain cells. Be off with you.
And of course the main denier was in the White House until very recently. I feel for families and friends of these deniers because they have to live or die with them. If this is your attitude then it stands to reason you are not being mindful of the fact that what you do effects the community.
