COVID-19 has provided a window into something far more disturbing than the microbial and viral dangers nature has up its sleeve.
The real viral agent here is people and their irrational, illogical and irresponsible behavior. Some anecdotes and observations from the past several days/weeks to illustrate the point:
• I was in Lihu‘e Safeway a couple of days ago, and there was a mother and father with what appeared to be a 3- or 4-year-old son. They were all walking around the store while the son was periodically engaged in this open-mouthed wet cough. The parents did absolutely nothing to stop this. The lack of respect for the health of others is hard to take;
• Across the country, people are descending upon stores like locusts to strip the shelves bare. Meanwhile, those not caught up in this irrational frenzy and just trying to go about our daily lives can’t even go to the store and get things as we would normally do. You are engaging in hoarding. You are negatively impacting the lives of the people around you while you do this. You are contributing to hysteria and panic. Don’t claim to be “living with aloha” because you are far from it. That excess food is going to rot and be thrown away or sit in your freezer for years until it can’t be used for anything when someone else on the island could have used it when it was fresh. This is pure selfishness. And don’t think that sharing your loot at some point down the road makes you any better. You are still hoarding and, frankly, it should be expected and made illegal with stiff penalties every time something like this occurs;
• A coworker told me that that another coworker told them that they should buy a gun to protect themselves and their family. From what? Is this person admitting that the people of Kaua‘i are not stable and should be counted on to become dangerous? Based on what I am seeing with other exceedingly selfish behavior, perhaps this is correct. The coworker who told me this was clearly disturbed by the suggestion. This is another example of people creating mindless panic. If the best advice you have for your fellow Kaua‘i residents is that they should buy a gun, please stop offering your advice, as you are not helping anybody;.
• I keep hearing people complain about “the media” causing panic. They are doing no such thing. They are trying to provide you with the information they have been able to get (which hasn’t been easy due to the issue to be discussed next). You, the public, are causing the panic. Moreover, if the media reported nothing, you’d be angry with them for not giving you information. You can’t have it both ways. Apparently, you only want them to give you the information you want, but you don’t know anything about the situation to even know what information you want or need. Just stop it already with scapegoating the media for your lack of knowledge and inability to react rationally to what you hear;
• Republican government officials have created an atmosphere of confusion. First, in the annual hatefest known as CPAC, they push this idea that the virus is a “Democratic hoax.” As they are doing this, one of their own is exposing other attendees to the virus in what can only be seen as the most delicious instant karmic retribution imaginable. Now, these officials find themselves self-quarantined due to a “hoax” virus, but we hear not one of them backtracking on their irresponsible rhetoric. The president tries to control the message of the CDC by not allowing it to speak directly to the American people without Executive Branch filtering. He spreads lies about the danger, tells people to continue going to work, exposes his lack of knowledge about the seasonal flu claiming he didn’t know anyone ever died from it, manages to get himself exposed by at least two people, and shuts down travel from Europe without discussing it with other world leaders. Remember, this is supposed to be a “Democratic hoax.” All the while, the stock market is tanking because the message his administration is putting out is one of irredeemable ineptitude.
Honestly, this analysis could go on an on. There are so many examples of sheer stupidity at work here.
People are the virus. Rationality and logic is the only effective antiviral. Please seek it out before you contribute to the failure of society.

Before anyone goes there…no “change of tone,” no idea to give everyone $1000, no policy decision that this administration can possibly come up with at this point after wasting valuable time propagating one lie after another will make up for how it has handled the situation up until this point. Lives have been endangered as a result of this gross ineptitude. People clearly still don’t grasp the seriousness of the situation as they continue to call this a liberal hoax. People clearly have no concern for their fellow human being whatsoever when they clear out stores of vital supplies. Did any of you who have engaged in this behavior ever consider the effect it would have on people with a fixed income who maybe couldn’t immediately go out and buy supplies? I agree with this letter. I can surmise that the newcomers here, who have arrived since Iniki, (yes, to me, that is a newbie), have brought their ignorant, mainland attitudes with them. However our own people are also just as willfully ignorant as well. That is why clearing the island of the tourists is a great first step. Clearing the island of the Mainland in-beds is another thing entirely. All non essential mainland folks who have a bad attitude and don’t want to comply should be airlifted out immediately. Take the rest with you, as well.
The only thing that will change everyone mind, is if there are deaths. There has to be deaths first, if anyone here nowadays will take it seriously. People run around every day with the rosy little glasses on. They are impervious to anything. For various reasons. Like, they have Jesus, or they are local born and raised or they are some sort of guru who drinks kambucha and bananas all day.
The Mayor did the right thing. If no one likes it, hey go to Oahu where they don’t care. But Kauai is protected now, and if there are no deaths, hey great. It means we did something right. But I have news for everyone. As much as everyone coughs and sneezes and kisses and hugs, and Hawaiian kisses, its just a matter of time. We have a huge population here of older people. Sometimes they have the worst attitudes on this.
They say ‘Oh really? Oh< i am not worried, I had a good life.". So, essentially if you die, you die. Well this novel virus that has never been seen before and no one has ever heard of before may be morphing. New evidence is coming out of Italy and China that younger people can be affected. and die from this virus. If you have it you can shed the virus for up to 37 days. You may feel great but you are infecting others who may, actually want to like, and are trying to protect themselves and survive. Bottom line is, if the mainland style rules here, then this wont work. Your money wont save you, your skin color won't save you, Your name cant save you, your religion can't save you, your lifted truck and great stereo system cant save you, and above all, your ignorance can't save you. So, knock it off, and do the right thing

Who gets the stress when you cannot pay the mortgage, the medical bills, etc? The panic is caused by irrational people coupled with an inept administration’s DEPLORABLE response to something which has been predicted for many years now (those pesky scientists and their evil money-grabbing predictions). He continues to compound this harm on a daily basis by making this issue strictly about himself and his image. Apparently, and quite unfortunately, his supporters are not going to get a clue about this until someone they care about succumbs to this virus. But that is pretty much the way it always has been–some people have to learn their lessons the hard way, and that would be fine if they weren’t endangering everyone else in the process.

Here’s reality: Italy imposed a full ban on flights from China on the 31 of January. The U.S. began to restrict flights from China four days later. The U.S. policy was only a restriction, with wide exemptions. Italy’s ban obviously didn’t work for them!

I will just point out that you are basically justifying hoarding and being ready for violence to protect your hoarded loot BECAUSE you hoarded and that put other people in a situation where they did not have the resources they needed. If this doesn’t highlight the selfishness at work and make it plainly obvious to even the selfish ones engaging in the acts, nothing ever will. Here is the difference between people like you and people like me: I would never even THINK of creating a situation where another person might not be able to get the things they need because I overindulged, and then feel justified to commit violence against them. I would strive to not put them in such a position. You, however, seem to think it your DUTY, if not your God-given right, to be completely dismissive of the needs of others and their capabilities to meet those needs.

Your “president” has lied about this situation from Day 1, and his lies have created a culture of confusion which is going to lead to many deaths. People are just too dramatic! Many people love drama in their lives, and it make them feel more alive. The crazier, the more alive they feel. The virus stories just feed their need.
The selfishness of hoarding is appalling. Just shop as you normally would. People on island should already have a stockpile of goods due to the possibilities of hurricanes. Why add to it?
Let’s all just calm down and let this play out. We will make it through if we settle down and adjust to the new way of life. Look out for one another and think before you act.

This crisis exists in a weird space between crazy preppers who are prepared for everything and spring break bro’s who won’t prepare for anything. No need to hoard or get guns here in Kauai. Now is the time to really dig down to practice Aloha. True , there are many cases of idiots out there, always has been and always will be but, just look at the story about the two boys and the people of Hanalei helping the stranded. I very much appreciate the sentiment. I have not written much the past few years. In some respects, I feel there is very little point. I have to say that I am heartened by the amount of positive response this received. I wish I could get to the point where the comments of those people who simply don’t get it and prefer to wallow in their sty of selfishness didn’t bring me down so much, but I find their views so incredibly abhorrent that it’s difficult. I had composed a short essay in my head addressing fallacies in your letter regarding irrationality being more dangerous than a virus. After seeing the first salvo of comments praising you for your thoughts I realized…I had misinterpreted the title of your letter. I thought from the title that you were implying that the public’s reaction to the virus (panicing and hoarding, etc.) was ‘irrational’ as in ‘un-called-for’. Now I understand that your concern was the thoughtless actions of others will somehow INCREASE your likelihood of catching the latest virus from China. I’ll just call it the ‘China virus’ since viruses are typically recognized by science by where they originate from. When I saw the mindless praise being heaped on you I decided to simply take the high road, save my point-by-point roast of your shallow rant, and simply leave you with this: Everyone is likely going to eventually get this virus. No amount of avoiding “open-mouthed wet cough” by little humans is going to prevent it. That’s what little humans do, BTW. They do lots of gross stuff and will continue to do so no how much you try to shame their parents. More or fewer firearms on the island won’t change your odds of catching a virus. Gun violence on the island, BTW, is way behind driving without a license, driving under the influence, possession of controlled substances, threatening behavior and domestic abuse. Check the arrest log in this same paper if you don’t believe me. Back to my comment about the China virus: Ever heard of chicken pox? It’s a virus that’s been around a long time. Most humans have either caught it or have been vaccinated against it. Different gene pools respond differently to the virus. We haven’t stopped it. And it still kills a small number of people that have weak immune systems. What is our government telling us about the measures taken against the China virus? Slow the spread? Is that right? The government’s response to the virus has changed over the weeks because they didn’t know how fast it would spread and how long it would take for victims to recover. Thank the Chinese for their secrecy. A hospital can’t handle 500 seniors with emphysema showing up at their door all at the same time needing a respirator. By slowing the spread to match the rate that we can treat patients we will limit the number of needless deaths. Most who catch this won’t need treatment in a hospital. The odds of completely wiping out a virus that can be transmitted undetected and stays alive on non-living surfaces for days has lots of places to hide and would be nearly impossible to completely wipe out. As I surmised, most of us will catch it or be vaccinated against it. Living in fear of something that is inevitable that isn’t even remotely likely to do great harm to you is irrational. Even isolating yourself on an island is a lost cause. The virus might go into hiding for the summer or a period of time and then come back when the conditions are right. Maybe a vaccine will be available by then. Maybe not. It’s still a good idea to keep your distance from little humans with “open-mouthed wet cough” and give up eating bat soup.

People need to take these warnings seriously. Maybe someone should just start another newspaper. Someone just might sue when this is over, for promoting gatherings and encouraging people to go out and taking a tongue in cheek and roll the eyes style to what is happening. Since then, the “president” has continued to tell falsehoods and confuse people, and is now peddling this racist/xenophobic “China virus” nonsense. The virus is already referred to by at least THREE names with which everyone is familiar. There is absolutely no need for him to engage in this behavior EXCEPT to rile up his xenophobic base. He and Republicans are the ones who have been politicizing this from the very start–and much as they always do, when they start saying OTHER people are doing something, it’s because they are doing that thing themselves. Bush (who I always thought was dumber than a pet rock), or ANYBODY could do a better job with this than the incompetent being currently occupying the office. What troubles me is that young people are setting the example for adults, who then not only act selfishly, but insist upon trying to argue how it is totally appropriate for them to do so, as some have done here. The series of events in this situation is what it is and a matter of public record, and if you are truly concerned about it being politicized, then you need to be speaking out about what this “administration” is doing. SCROTUS is currently lamenting that China didn’t warn everyone sooner. Well guess what? Other countries found out about this the same time we did, and their responses were much faster and more effective. I am no more neutral about what SCROTUS is doing here than one of you would be if an armed intruder barged into your home and put a gun to your loved one’s head. I’m not sure what “his pandemics” refers to, but please feel free to provide us with the specifics about hIs response to the Ebola outbreak and to H1N1 so it ca be discussed here. Ive often been criticized for my writings by these equally prolific commentators with name calling or that i seek mental evaluation, with nothing accomplishe in these kinds of word salads.
