MANA — Ohu and Michelle Vierra’s family, and the Nakamura brothers — Karl and Jon — ended the Garden Isle Racing Association’s season-opening drag races by taking first and second places, respectively at the Kaua‘i Raceway Park in Mana.
Ohu and Michelle’s daughter Kelsie Iida-Vierra finished runner up in the Top Gun class, and granddaughter Shalia Vierra was tops in the Jr. Dragster class to bring the honor to the Vierra family in the night race, Saturday.
Karl Nakamura was tops in the Bike ET class aboard his ‘07 Kawasaki EX650 that clocked a 13.32-second Elapsed Time to reach 97 mph on a 13.28 dial-in. He was joined by his brother Jon finishing runner-up in the Pro ET class.
Shalia Vierra captured the Jr. Dragster class on her 8.92 ET, reaching 74.99 mph on an 8.90 dial-in ahead of Ryant Sakamoto who stopped the clocks on a 7.91 ET, reaching 82.79 mph on a 7.90 dial-in.
Calvin Costa topped the Top Gun class when his roadster clocked an 8.31 ET reaching 159.25 mph on an 8.31 dial-in. He captured the top spot when Kelsie Iida-Vierra red lighted, her Spitzer dragster nailing a 7.77 ET, reaching 169.73 mph on a 7.76 dial-in.
John Nakashima topped the Pro ET class when his ‘14 Chevy Camaro ran a 13.99 ET reaching 84.65 mph on a 10.80 dial-in over the efforts of Jon Nakamura whose ‘67 Chevy Nova red lighted, running a 9.75 ET reaching 137.66 mph on a 10.00 dial-in.
Lacin Montemayor broke out in the Muscle V8 class to give the top spot to Kevin Suga who clocked a 12.05 ET reaching 110.19 mph on a 12.02 dial-in. Montemayor’s break out run aboard an ‘87 Chery S10 tripped the clocks at a 12.58 ET — two seconds faster than his 12.60 dial-in — reaching 104.24 mph.
Bronson Tabios captured the Sports Compact class on his 12.74 ET reaching 99.27 mph on a 12.02 dial-in over the efforts of Brie Saiki whose ‘00 Honda Civic clocked a 12.91 ET to reach 104.74 mph on a 12.83 dial-in.
Wendall Nonaka topped the Super Pro class on his 9.62 ET reaching 146.31 mph on a 9.62 dial-in over the challenge of Calvin Tani who finished with a 10.65 ET reaching 121.54 mph on a 10.62 dial-in.
AJ Basuel broke out in the Street class to give the top spot to Solomon Ruiz who ran a 14.35 ET reaching 97.46 mph on a 14.20 dial-in. Basuel made the quarter mile on a 15.08 ET, breaking out on his 15.30 dial-in to reach 88.82 mph.
Following Karl Nakamura’s top run in the Bike ET class, Wilmark Geronimo red lighted to settle into the runner-up spot when his ‘04 Yamaha R6 clocked an 11.11 ET to reach l124.03 mph on an 11.10 dial-in.
The next drag race, scheduled for April 4th has been canceled.
“As per National Hot Rod Association, the Center for Disease Control, as well as our state and county guidelines, we are canceling our April 4th race due to the current Novel Coronavirus pandemic,” GIRA officials said on their website. “This situation is very fluid and we are taking it one race at a time.”
