The Kapa‘a High Warriors defeated the Waimea High Menehune, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Vidinha Stadium in Lihu‘e.
Warriors’ pitcher Noa Cardinez struck out a total of eight Menehune batters during the game.
The Menehune pitchers, consequently, were also stout. Kash Akita hung with Cardinez, striking out eight batters during four innings.
In the first inning, Kelcie Kimura-Masada hit a ground ball and reached bases on an error by Menehune catcher Kanaan Ephan, allowing Caden Shimabukuro to score and Cardinez to advance to third.
AJ Lee then singled to left score Cardinez and conclude the scoring for the Warriors in the top of the first.
Waimea would then answer in the bottom of the fifth inning. Kawelo Huddy grounded to Lee, which allowed Maka Shigematsu to score.
Neither team was able to score after that.
Softball
Warriors sweep Red Raiders
Kapa‘a 9, Kaua‘i High 8
The Kapa‘a High softball team catapulted out to a 6-0 lead by the sixth inning and was able to hold off a Red Raiders’ rally to win 9-8 Saturday afternoon.
Kapa‘a collected a total of six stolen bases in the victory, with Kaia Davis-Caberto leading the Warriors with two swipes.
The Warriors manufactured four runs in the third inning. Kaylana ‘Mags’ Maghanoy and Taelyn ‘Koko’ Dakamas both contributed in the big inning with RBIs.
The Red Raiders scored six runs in six innings, but it wasn’t enough.
During the rally, the Red Raiders got RBIs from Dreanalynn Tafiti, Autumn Lee, Brandy Aldrich, Jadyn-Minnie Naka‘ahiki and Lyla Samson.
Kapa‘a pitcher Shaylin “Doolie” Rivera was credited with the victory. Rivera threw five and two-thirds innings, allowing six hits and eight runs while striking out one and walking one.
Maghanoy was 2-for-3 in the victory.
Kapa‘a 5, Kaua‘i High 2
The Warriors’ softball team had a lot of run support from their top hitters to capture the first game 5-2 Saturday afternoon.
Kapa‘a had three top hitters in the victory. Savannah Simons was 2-for-4 with two hits and two RBIs. Seijia Makanani was 2-for-4 with a run scored, and Kai-lee Kupihea was 2-of-4 in the victory.
Tafiti had a strong day on the mound and with her bat. Tafiti allowed seven hits and three runs over seven innings to strike out seven.
