LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i Lifeguard Association is gearing up for its July 6th Wave fundraiser, featuring two of Hawai‘i’s headliners, Kapena and Amy Hanaiali‘i Gilliom.
Kelly Delima’s Kapena debuted in 1986 and immediately received Hoku Awards for best band performances and best albums in Hawai‘i. Now in their second generation, Kapena is a family affair, presenting up-tempo Hawaiian shows along with some of the sweetest harmonies on record.
KLA awards include the annual Percy Kinimaka Junior Lifeguard of the Year, the Ocean Safety Bureau’s Tower of Power recognition, and a Spirit of Aloha presentation to the lifeguard of the year.
Hanaiali‘i Gilliom’s closing performance will feature mele, chant and dance from her six Grammy-nominated albums and DVDs. She has been a KLA showstopper, and this year’s performance with her complete band will be a memorable one.
Alaska Airlines has partnered with KLA to provide two exciting trips for two, to the Sonoma wine country for a weeklong adventure to vineyards, dining and attractions in the region. A Timbers Resort surprise destination will also be up for grabs.
A silent auction wil take place, an ocean arts and crafts display will feature artwork by Kauai’s Lyon Hamilton, who will again perform, live art throughout the night, along with offering 10 original paintings in the silent-auction arena. Artifacts and jewelry will also be for sale.
The Kaua‘i Marriott Resort &Beach Club is giving away their Presidential Suite for two nights plus a pool cabana and dinner for two via random drawing from all silent-auction bidders that evening.
An added attraction this year includes Ni‘ihau shell jewelry displays, which represent an important part of the ocean-minded culture.
This year, the KLA 6th Wave celebration will highlight the beautiful artwork of Ni‘ihau’s Kanahele, family with a special dedication and remembrance to mama Annie Ane Kelley Kanahele, born on Ni‘ihau April 27, 1936, and who passed away last year.
Her legendary shell work has been passed on from generation to generation. And as this Ni‘ihau family perpetuates her legacy they in turn spread her blessings and aloha.
Kaua‘i artisans wishing to complement the evening’s craft and jewelry area can contact Andy Melamed at 482-0218 by Tuesday, March 31.
KLA is a nonprofit organization that has raised over $1.35 million over the past nine years for the Kaua‘i Fire Department Ocean Safety Bureau.
KLA’s 6th Wave will be held at the Kaua‘i Marriott Resort &Beach Club Grand Ballroom Saturday, July 18, from 5 to 10 p.m., featuring chef Guy Higa’s award-winning buffet. Tickets, tables and sponsorship for the KLA 2020 Vision are available through its marketing director, Chantal Zarbaugh, 651-8913, or go to Kauailifeguards.org.
