LIHU‘E — Registration has kicked off for the 2nd Annual Garden Island Boogie Board Classic, an event courtesy of Kaikeha, INC., that takes place at Prince Kuhio Beach on Mother’s Day weekend May 9 – 10, 2020 with an awards ceremony at Prince Kuhio Park on Sunday.
The Pro-Am event will be offering $10,000 in cash prize money, $5,000 cash for Drop Knee Pro and $5,000 cash for Open Pro. The Drop Knee Pro event will be a point-rated event for this year’s World Tour, top bodyboarders in Hawai’i will be on site to help guide the future generations. This community-based event will teach competitors the long term value that water sports can bring to their lives by having kupuna and professional bodyboarders mentor participants in the Amatuer Divisions of the Classic.
Kaua’i boys, World Champions Jeff and Dave Hubbard and Sammy Morretino are among top competitors who will be returning to this year’s event. Along with other top riders from around the state like Mack Crilley and Jacob Romero of Maui in addition to competitors from around the world.
There are a number of the states top youth riders anticipated to return to battle it out in the various youth amateur divisions; Mana Fujihara and Santiago Kirchner from Kona, Mehana Kamalani and Mika Salazar-Burmudez of Kaua’i.
The community is invited to attend.
In its second year, the Classic has gained an extreme amount of support from the community, according to spokespeople from Kaikeha. Current sponsors are: Maui Jim Sunglasses, Kamehameha Schools, Burkart Construction LTD., Hubboards, Kaua’i Lifeguard Association, Kong Radio Group, Keoki’s Restaurants, Spirit of CAN, YMCA, Grady Pest Solutions, Kaua’i Juice Company, OnoPops, BCO Construction, Inky Pop Print Shop, Menehune Water, Lawai Beach Resort, Marriott Resort Kaua’i, Hawaiian Islands Land Trust, Nukumoi Surf, Science, Triad, Kicks Fins.
The Classic will run from 7am to 4pm both days.
For Amateur Divisions (Super Grom, Menehune, Juniors, Girls =N:E= Open Mens, Open Womens, Masters) entry is $25 with over $12,000 worth awards &prizes. Entry for the Professional Divisions is $200.
