PO‘IPU — The Kaua‘i High boys and girls tennis teams began their seasons by defeating both Waimea High teams Saturday afternoon in Po‘ipu.
The Raider girls swept the Menehune in all five matches in both singles and doubles play, while the boys playing in a closely-contested battle edged the Menehune 3-2.
Kaua‘i High coach Shannon Burkman said she felt her team’s positive results were the culmination of off-season work.
“We were proud of our players today who have been working hard for months on their skills and strategies,” Burkman said. “Today we emphasized the mindset on the court. We saw our players go out there with confidence and belief. Most importantly, we saw them make the micro and macro adjustments necessary for beating their opponents.”
Unlike other team sports, Burkman said she feels tennis is unusual because a lot of players have to make adjustments on their own with little guidance from coaches during matches.
“Coaches can’t coach during the match (except for a minute between sets), so we loved seeing the players make their assessments of the match performance for success,” Burkman said.
