KOLOA– Ladies of the Garden Island Renegade Rollerz, Kauai’s roller derby club, were happy they sold out their Krispy Kreme fundraiser on Saturday in old Koloa Town.
Their team consists of more than 20 ladies and could be found all over the island selling donuts on Saturday to pay for their trip to the Big Island in May.
The Renegade Rollerz are one out of 10 teams from Hawai‘i and the mainland entering in the Big Island Brawl which is a roller derby tournament held at the Waimea District Park from May 28-31.
“We do a couple of fundraisers a year. But we currently don’t have any other fundraiser plans. But if anyone wants to follow us on Facebook or Instagram we are always welcoming new folks for all of our open positions. We love our community support,” Renegade member Kristin Green said.
Team captain Tristol Manuel a.k.a ‘Bad Kitty’ says the group “was made to build stronger women.”
Her teammate Green agreed.
“We are pretty diverse, we have moms, business owners, teachers, its not just one type of person. Our motto is: ‘Viva La Girls’,” Green said.
Later that day, the ladies were found at Island School’s Emerald City Gala, dressed as roller monkeys to help with the ‘Yellow Brick Road’ theme at their event.
They are always finding ways to give back to the community, its part of being in the club.
Garden Island Renegade Rollerz is also recruiting for Junior Derby, which starts with an informational meeting from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. on March 11 at the rink near the Brian J. Baptiste Sports Complex in Kapa‘a.
Junior Derby teaches kids and teens basic skating skills, as well as rules and strategies of roller derby. Open to ages 9-17. Info: 652-3410
