HONOLULU —Swim Kaua‘i Aquatics coaches Curt Colby, Whitney Mitchell and Kailee Mu took 14 swimmers to O‘ahu for the Short Course Hawaiian Age Group Championships at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex Feb. 20 to 23.
“Most swimmers are on the young side of their age groups,” Colby said. “Watch out next year.”
The team finished 11th overall, scoring a team total of 541 points. Together, SKA swimmers scored an average of 38 points per swimmer.
Leading SKA were the defending state champion swimmers Kohlton Sanchez, 10, who placed first in the 10-and-under in the 50 breaststroke, recording a time of 37.07, and Chloe Inouye, 13, competed in the 50 freestyle, recording a time of 24.52. Mahina Dameron, 13, filed a 200 butterfly time of 2:08.00, a 14-second drop time from her previous swim meet.
SKA took its first-ever 10-and-under girls’ relay team consisting of Maiha Kjeldsen, 9, Moana Liddell, 8, Chloe Pascual, 9, and Addy Mottley, 9.
They placed seventh in the 10-and-under 200 medley relay, and eighth in the 200 freestyle relay.
Out of 55 swims, SKA recorded 46 of their personal best times.
Other highlights of the meet included Inouye, who finished with a time 1:05.67 in the 100 breaststroke to fall out of first place by 3.01 seconds.
TaiMana Kjeldsen,12, scored points with a 15th-place in the 50 breaststroke in 36.82. Ian Raquel, 14, scored in all six of his events with his best place, finishing sixth in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 17.59.29, a 17-second drop.
Kai Mottley, 15, had a four-second drop in the 200 butterfly event in 2:00.21.
Pulama Ka‘eo, 13, filed her three best times, with a top finish of ninth in the 500 freestyle.
Madeline Hoesel, 17, scored in three events, and had the best time of 25.15 in the 50 freestyle. Maiha Kjeldsen, 9, excelled in all five of her events, with her best in the 10-and-under 100 butterfly with a time of 1.18.84 to finish fifth.
Kamaira Silva, 15, scored in six of her seven events, with her best of eight in 1,000 free with a 27-second drop with a time of 11:04.38. Tyler Tanaka, 15, scored in five of seven events, with his best time recorded time in the 200 breaststroke, in 2:14.63, and in the 1,650 freestyle, with a time of 17.31.09, for a 41.17-second drop from his previous race at the state meet.
