The Rev. Jan C. Rudinoff
The Rev. Jan C. Rudinoff passed away on Feb. 4, 2020, at the age of 77, three weeks after being diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Born on March 31, 1942 in Philadelphia to Mortimer and Virginia Rudinoff, he grew up in Richmond, Virginia.
He was the priest at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Lihu‘e from 1974 to 2004. He preached about the redemptive power of love, and lived that each day. He impacted many lives inside and outside the church. He served as a chaplain to the Kaua‘i Police Department, a Vietnam Vet counselor, and he started the chaplaincy program at Wilcox Medical Center.
He was a veteran who served in the Army Medical Corps in Vietnam from 1965 to 1966 after attending the Virginia Military Institute and being commissioned as a first lieutenant.
He came to Hawai‘i after Vietnam and worked for Spencecliff Corp. as a hotel and restaurant manager. In 1969 he began his pastoral education at the Virginia Theological Seminary, and graduated in 1972. His retirement was spent enjoying his family and traveling the world.
He is survived by beloved wife of 44 years, Paula, children Christopher of Stockholm, Sarah of Seattle, Jeffrey (Sara Jo) Irons of Kapa‘a, Joshua (Holly) of Lihu‘e, Elizabeth of Seattle, and grandchildren Chloe, Sabryn, Thor and Orion.
A celebration of life will be held at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Lihu‘e on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 11 a.m.
The family requests that flowers be omitted.
Helen Esplana Watson
Helen Esplana Watson passed away on Dec. 28, 2019, at the age of 94.
She was born on Oct. 26, 1925, in Lihu‘e, and was retired from the hotel industry.
She was preceded in death by mother Bernardina Iban and father Alejandro Esplana.
She is survived by daughters Cecilia Suan (Lloyd) Bond, Cileen Suan (Myron) Yamashita, Virgina (Victor) De Peralta, Norma Watson (John) Ross, Rose “Loke” Watson (Rudy) Notebo, Davilyn Watson and Veronica Texeira, sons Ceasar Esplana Suan and Harold Esplana (Juliette Tapacio Sarmiento) Suan, sisters Pastora “Patsy” Torres, Maria “Mary” Gonsales and Euphemia “Darlene” Steaveson, 21 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren, 12 great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be on Saturday, Feb. 22, with visitation at 10 a.m. and services starting at 11 a.m. at Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary at 3168 Po‘ipu Rd., Koloa.
A celebration of life will also be held in Hilo on Sunday, March 8, at 1 p.m. at Soka Gakkai International-USA Buddhist Center, 695 Makalika St., Hilo.
Joyce Ann Kanehe
Joyce Ann Kanehe, 73, of Wainiha, passed away at home on Feb. 16, 2020. She was born in Maryland on Nov. 19, 1946, was retired and a veteran of the U.S. Army.
She was preceded in death by husband Darrel Kanehe.
She is survived by son Dereck (Nicole) Kanehe, daughter Michelle (Daniel) Kanehe-Hudson, and four grandchildren.
Services will be held in Oregon at a later date.
Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Charles Lester Trembath Jr.
Charles Lester Trembath Jr., 90, peacefully passed away in his home on Dec. 24, 2019. Born in Sheridan, Wyoming, on Jan. 9, 1929, he was raised in Colorado and moved to Kaua‘i in 1971.
He served as a sergeant in the Army Signal Corps during the Korean War. After his service he became an electrical engineer and continued to serve the government in communications.
At 56 he retired as engineer in charge at WWVH in Mana, Kaua‘i.
Retirement lead him to Kaua‘i Lagoons, where he worked as a golf marshal. Lovingly known as “Uncle Chuck,” he was a musician for Aunty Healani’s Hula Halau and spent much of his time with the Alu Like Kupuna.
He ws preceded in death by parents Charles Lester Trembath Sr. and Julia Toro.
He is survived by wife Opal “Healani” Trembath, sister Charlene Longacre, children Christina (Steve) Pilkington, Carma (David) Lovely, Erin (Bob) Imhoff, Kristi (Claurino Bueno) Lee, Riq (Michelle) Lee, Debbie (George) Jackson, 20 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of lie is Saturday, Feb. 22, at Prince Kuhio Park, 5061 Lawai Rd., Koloa, with service at 11 a.m. and celebration to follow.
