KAPA‘A — The Bernice Hundley Gym, located on the Kapa‘a High School campus, rang with the excitement of a volleyball tournament, Sunday.
“This is a mini tournament we have for all the club volleyball players at least once a month,” said Tori Kagawa, a coach with the Ho‘oikaika volleyball program. “Normally, we hold the tournament at Ed Center, the educational center operated by the United Church of Christ, in Waimea. But Na Koa has a lot of teams so we came to Kapa‘a, this time.”
Teams in the younger age groups opened the day-long tournament that played to a three-game set format.
“We hold these tournaments so the younger players can have some experience in tournament play,” Kagawa said. “The team I coach doesn’t have that many kids that age so it’s hard. Some of the players came today so it was lucky that the other age group allowed them to play.”
Sunday’s play centered between Na Koa, young players from the Eastside and North Shore, and Ho‘oikaika who embrace youth on the Westside.
Coaches and officials are familiar faces from within the ranks of the high school-aged Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation league, and the Kaua‘i Fire Department and the county’s Department of Parks and Recreation.
“Coach Kehau Regidor has a team, and there are other teams from the Lihu‘e area,” Kagawa said. “This is really all-island.”
