KIHEI, Maui — Several island swimmers finished in the top 20 during the preliminary competition of the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Division II state meet held Friday and Saturday at the Kihei Aquatic Complex.
Kaua‘i High senior Kai Norman placed 17th in the prelims in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.31 seconds.
Kapa‘a High’s Tyler Tanaka finished 17th in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:03.32.
Tanaka finished 15th in the 100-yard breaststroke, with a time of 1:04.24.
Kaua‘i High freshman Kamaira Silva finished 9th in the 100-yard freestyle prelims, recording a time of 54.74.
Kapa‘a High senior Maddie Hoesel finished the 100-yard event with a time of 56.40.
Hoesel finished 20th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.16.
Kaua‘i High’s Kai Mottley finished 18th in the prelims of the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.77.

The Red Raider boys’ 400-yard freestyle relay team of Ryden Williams, Jeremy Herr, Motley and Norman placed 14th in the preliminaries with a time of 3:33.31 seconds. The Kapa‘a team of Treysen Nishida, Tanaka, Ian Raquel and Braden Chang finished 19th with a time of 3:42.32.
The Red Raiders’ 200-yard relay team Jacob Rich, Ryden Williams, Mottley and Norman finished with a time of 1:50:38.
The Kaua‘i High girls’ 400-yard freestyle relay team of Miya Reese, Alana Cayabyab, Malia Splittstoesser and Silva placed 18th with a time of 4:03.36.
The Red Raiders’ 200-yard medley relay team of Silva, Safford, Cayabyab and Natalie Claytor placed 19th in the prelims, in 2:04.20.
None of the individuals or relays qualified for Saturday’s finals.
