LIHU‘E — The county Department of Public Works and Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. announced that construction work will continue at night, closing portions of Rice Street from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Work is planned from Monday Feb. 24 to Friday, Feb. 28, weather-permitting.
Night work along Rice Street consists of repaving the road surface from Kuhio Highway to the Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Highway (Kapule Highway).
However, the Kalena Street and Rice Street intersection will remain open for access to cross Rice Street during paving operations.
Rice Street will be closed in two phases:
• Kuhio Highway to Hardy Street;
• Hardy Street to the Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Highway.
Access to property within the closure area will be restricted during work hours due to the paving work. A temporary traffic detour will be available utilizing Hardy Street for the first phase, and Ho‘olako Street, Malae Street and Puaole Street for the second phase.
Businesses in the area will remain open during these closures.
Parking for business patrons will be available at the Lihu‘e Civic Center and Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall. For affected businesses open after 7 p.m., Kiewit is coordinating partial access depending on the scope and times of the work. Details for access are available at revitalizelihuetown.com.
For affected residents, Kiewit will have construction flaggers onsite during the closure, but there will be periods of time when properties will not be accessible by car during paving. All access will be restored by 7 a.m. each day.
Motorists are encouraged to allow for extra travel time when driving near the work areas, use alternate routes, and to observe and follow all construction traffic controls.
Contact Milissa Ceria at 840-3282 or visit revitalizelihuetown.com for questions and concerns. For night-time access issues or concerns, contact Jason Buechlein at 212-8060.
Would it be possible to include a graphic for these closure announcements?
If you’re feeling low and want a really good laugh, go the the website revitalizelihue.com and check out the renderings of this project. There’s only 3 renderings and they are literally the most terrible I’ve ever seen. Not even a child would think these were acceptable. They cut and pasted a black man riding his bike in the middle of 8 bit cars that look like a 1997 video game. They don’t even show proper bike lanes. Renderings are usually a major part of a project like this and if these are the renderings they made for their website then it’s reasonable to assume the rest of the project is equally poor. Sad to see such a waste of money when there’s so many better ways to use it.
