Alissa Hartmann traded in her skis for a surfboard and was on hand with her seasoned paint supplies Thursday during the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Shakedown Series, Race No. 1, that launched the 2020 season. She was getting help from Del Ford of Washington, who has been taking in the races for the past several decades, and Jeff Dorn was having a blast reuniting with the spectators and sailors.

Kudos to Pat Porter, Melanie Okamoto and all the county Department of Parks &Recreation ‘ohana and Na Kupuna Council for hosting another successful (more than 200 happy faces) Valentine’s Day shindig for Kaua‘i’s kupuna from Kilauea to Kekaha. Lt. Shawn Keoho of The Salvation Army Hanapepe Corps could not stay away, and Shirley Simbre-Medeiros came to check out the scene because she said she’s not with Alu Like anymore, just driving bus.
Of course, the prize goddess herself, Marilyn Matsumoto of the Lihu‘e Senior Center, had to be there with a basketful of giveaways, and Kaleo Carvalho said the three-piece was just right for the Kekaha breeze at the gatherin led by the Kalaheo Seniors.
Kudos, too, to all those quilters who added to the Friday-night excitement at Kukui Grove Center on Valentine’s Day, where Joann Watanabe was hosting two Okinawa Christian College students, Hana Miyazato and Yuna Shokita, who even got to decorate their own Valentine’s Day cookies.
If you hurry, you can still take in the American Culinary Federation Kaua‘i Chapter Breakfast at Kaua‘i Community College. It closes at 11 a.m.
