Karen Anne Liberman
Karen Anne Liberman, 77, of Kapaia, passed away at home on Dec. 19, 2019.
She was born in Chicago on Feb. 6, 1942, and was a licensed hair stylist and massage therapist.
She was a Beverly Hills hair stylist from 1964 to 1976, where she also modeled for TV commercials and magazines. She styled hair and makeup for movies and actors including Richard Dryfuss in “Jaws” and Anthony Herraras in the “Young and the Restless,” to name a few. After moving to Kaua‘i in 1976 she opened and operated the “Hair Kare Saloon” in Puhi and “Hair Kare Salon” in the former Kauai Hilton (now Kaua‘i Beach Resort) near Hanama‘ulu, while also doing hair and makeup for movies and weddings.
She was active in hiking and dancing and blessed the lives of thousands of friends on Kaua‘i and around the world, and was blessed by each of them. She always had a positive mind and loving heart.
She was preceded in death by parents Marion “Ted” and Kay Shanks.
She is survived by brother Ted (Cathy) Shanks, nephews Justin Shanks and Troy Shanks, grandnephew Jacob Shanks, grandniece Jenavi Shanks, and life partner Scott Lever.
A celebration of life is Saturday, Feb. 8, on Ma‘alo Road (1/4 mile up road to Wailua Falls in Kapaia) at 11 a.m. Signs will be posted.
The Rev. Jan C. Rudinoff
The Rev. Jan C. Rudinoff passed away on Feb. 4, 2020, at the age of 77, three weeks after being diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Born on March 31, 1942, in Philadelphia to Mortimer and Virginia Rudinoff, he grew up in Richmond, Virginia.
He was the priest at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Lihu‘e from 1974-2004. He preached about the redemptive power of love and lived that each day. He impacted many lives inside and outside the church. He served as a chaplain to the Kaua‘i Police Department, a Vietnam veterans’ counselor, and he started the chaplaincy program at Wilcox Medical Center.
He was a veteran who served in the Army Medical Corps in Vietnam from 1965 to 1966 after attending Virginia Military Institute and being commissioned as a first lieutenant. He came to Hawai‘i after Vietnam and worked for Spencecliff Corp. as a hotel and restaurant manager. In 1969 he began his pastoral education at the Virginia Theological Seminary, and graduated in 1972. His retirement was spent enjoying his family and traveling the world.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Paula, children Christopher, of Stockholm, Sweden, Sarah of Seattle, Jeffrey (Sara Jo) Irons of Kapa‘a, Joshua (Holly) of Lihu‘e, Elizabeth of Seattle, and grandchildren Chloe, Sabryn, Thor and Orion.
A celebration of life will be held at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Lihue on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 11 a.m.
The family requests flowers be omitted.
Julia Ornellas Souza
Julia Ornellas Souza, 88, of Kapa‘a, passed away at home on Feb. 3, 2020. She was born in Kilauea on June 14, 1931, and was a dedicated homemaker.
She was preceded in death by husband Stanley Souza Sr., parents John and Marian Ornellas, sisters Mabel Ebinger, Regina Ventura and Mary Ornellas, and brothers Albert Ornellas, Joaquin Ornellas, Johnny Ornellas, Joseph Ornellas and Patrick Ornellas.
She is survived by children Laurie Souza, Russell (Vernalyn) Souza, Stanley Jr. (Hollie) Souza, Paul (Adi) Souza and Jerry (Shaunne) Souza, grandchildren Kayla Souza, Rustan (Tracy Ogihara) Souza, Christy (Keola) Wong, Brittney (Tovi Boiser) Morrow, Bryson (Natalie) Morrow, Ryan (Mia Soderstrom) Morrow, Stanley William Souza III, Chelsea (Randy) Lawrence, Megan (Kristopher Jarquio) Souza, Taybree (Bryson Ancheta Suganuma) Souza and Ian Souza, great-grandchildren Leilanna Wong, Kailea Wong, Kaiwi Wong, Briana Morrow-Lopez, Tavyn Boiser, Brody Boiser, Baylee Boiser, Khairah Lawrence, Kyryn Lawrence, Isaiah Jarquio, Khloe Jarquio, Maya Jarquio, Kaeden Souza and Brysten Ancheta, sisters Theresa Martins, Pauline Fernandes, Catherine Ornellas BVM and Eva Hieronymus, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22, at St. Catherine Church, with visitation from 8 a.m. and Mass celebrated at 10 a.m.
The family graciously requests flowers be omitted.
