LIHUE — The Martin Luther King Day holiday, Monday provided an opportune window for the Kauai Interscholastic Federation regatta to make up for a previously-scheduled event that was called due to inclement weather and brown water conditions.
Kauai High School teams in the Varsity Girls and Varsity Boys divisions took their respective races while the Waimea High School teams in the Junior Varsity Mixed and Varsity Mixed races took those races.
Kapaa High School JV girls took that division race after stroking the .5-mile Sprints course to a solid 5 minutes, 13.82 seconds run, nearly five seconds faster than the runner up Kauai High School team.
During the varsity girls’ races, Waimea controlled the preliminary heats, finishing with a 5:03.97 run over Kapaa’s 5:05.50, and Kauai High School’s 5:10.55. The Red Raiders capitalized on the break leading to the finals when the Kauai girls stroked to a first finish by breaking the 5-minute mark on a 4:59.59, relegating the Warriors to second place on a 5:03.12, and Waimea to third on a 5:06.45 finish.
Similarly, Waimea finished third in the preliminaries of the Varsity Mixed, but rebounded during the finals to best the Island School (4:51.57) and Kapaa (4:57.48) teams with a 4:47.07 run.
The make up of the previously-cancelled event brings the KIF regatta schedule up to date with the KIF Championships scheduled for Saturday starting at 9 a.m.
At stake are races in the Varsity Girls and Varsity Boys division where Kapaa leads the Varsity Girls with a cumulative 28 points, followed by Kauai High School at 23 points. Both Kapaa and Kauai are tied in the Varsity Boys standings with 27 points each.
