POIPU — The Rotary Club of Poipu Beach held a fundraiser to help end polio at The Cabana Bar and Grill at Poipu Beach Athletic Club on Friday.
Attendees donated $5 for a can of Kona beer, and donations were matched 2-to-1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Rotary began the Global Polio Eradication Initiative more than three decades ago, and today wild polio remains in just two countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
“With polio nearly eradicated, Rotary and its partners must sustain this progress and continue to reach every child with the polio vaccine,” a press release said. “Without full funding and political commitment, this paralyzing disease could return to polio-free countries, putting children everywhere at risk.”
