KAPAA — Sharyl Lam Yuen of the Grove Farm Foundation has witnessed firsthand the care of Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital’s emergency room.
“We are grateful to have an emergency room that benefits the east and North Shore communities of Kauai,” Lam Yuen said.
The Grove Farm Foundation recently awarded $5,000 to the hospital emergency room, the program that was started in 2005.
Lam Yuen’s affinity with the hospital extends beyond the emergency room, because her mother, the late Irene Maeda, was a long-time volunteer with the SMMH Auxiliary. Lan Yuen continues this legacy, volunteering with the hospital’s activities to benefit patients.
SMMH was founded in 1917 by the Planters’ Association as a memorial to Samuel Mahelona, the stepson of Albert Wilcox, who was the brother of Grove Farm founder George Norton Wilcox.
