PUHI — Tania Hensley of Natural Pet Hawaii was preparing to return Margo, a Kauai Humane Society adoptable, to the Kipu facility Friday.
“We usually get the humane society’s Pet of the Week at the shop on Fridays,” said Ali Lauer of the pet shop in the Puhi Industrial Park. “They’re usually here from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. before we need to return them.”
In addition to returning Margo to the shelter, Hensley prepared to deliver the fruits of a holiday food drive benefiting the homeless animals, including dogs and cats at the Kauai Humane Society.
“This is a lot,” Hensley said. “We didn’t do an accounting, but it’s a lot — more than last year, when the Kauai Animal Welfare Society combined with the Kauai Humane Society for a drive. We are so blessed with so many people who love animals.”
The drive started in December and ran until a few days following New Year’s at the pet shop, collecting primarily dog and cat food, hygenic pet supplies and toys, as well as carrying cases.
“There was a person who contributed toward a large carrying case,” Lauer said. “That was an item needed for the transit program where homeless animals are shipped to a mainland facility. That moved out quickly because they needed it. We also had a contributor who, after reading about the drive in the paper, spent more than $100 in food for both dogs and cats — and he doesn’t even have pets!”
