LIHUE — The Hawaii Department of Transportation reminds the public there will be a single-lane closure on Kuhio Highway at Mile Marker 1 (the hill approaching Hanalei Bridge) seven days a week starting today.
The single-lane closure, with Hanalei-bound and Princeville-bound traffic alternating in the remaining open lane, will take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Sundays.
“Following the successful installation of the stabilizing mesh on the hillside on Dec. 16, HDOT is accelerating the work schedule for the slope-stabilization project,” a press release said.
The seven-days-a-week schedule will allow the contractor to complete the project prior to the expiration of the governor’s emergency proclamation on Jan. 28.
HDOT recommends motorists plan for delays and check traffic conditions before they get on the road.
“HDOT thanks the traveling public for their patience and kokua as we work to make Kuhio Highway more resilient to future weather events,” the release said.
Traffic always flows better with no LONG backups when DOT is regulating traffic at the Hanalei bridge. Even when one lane is closed. It’s ironic that they halted work for the holidays to help traffic flow and this actually made traffic worse.
